Can I attend aquanatal classes during work time?

I asked last week if I could attend a morning aquanatal class once a week that would take an hour out of my work time due to stress, aches, pains etc.

Head of HR is being a bit weird about it today. Am I within my rights to ask, or is it something you should do in your own time (not likely because they're all during the day!!) I'm sure my MW said I could attend them and work would have to agree...

You are legally entitled to take time off of work to attend antenatal appointments such as the midwife, hospital scans, hospital tour etc. But if it is just a relaxation class then I don't think you are as you don't HAVE to attend them.

I'm sure Abz is right... your employer has to let you go to proper ante natal appointments but not optional things like aqua....... sorry hun.
worth asking though if there is a maternity/ health policy??

If your doctor recommends it (i.e. puts it in writing) then your employer should accept that - however, you are expected to arrange classes outside of working hours if possible.

If there is the same class outside of working hours then you probably need to attend that - if the only one available is during your working hours take the details to your doctor and get them to write a letter confirming they recommend you attend it (ideally stating it is in relation to stress and relaxation) and take it to HR.

It may be that HR are just uncomfortable asking for evidence/a letter or that they are worried you mentioned *stress*.

Details of your entitlements can be found at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/...ts/DG_10026556

You won't be entitled to this=otherwqise would never have been at work! It's it a nice thing to do, but not a necessity-you need to do it in your own time im afraid
