I am thinking of applying for a job in a nursery for when I start work in February and have a few questions.

What qualifications do I need to have?

What sort of person are they looking for?

Would I be able to take Freya to the same nursery? (I know I personally would not be looking after her!).

Any other advice?

I work in a private nursery and staff are given 50% off nursery fees. This is taken before tax too so you're making a fairly good saving.

Not quite sure on much else as i dont deal with the children!

I was lookin into this the other week actually...Alot of places are looking for atleast a NVQ in level 3 (presumably in childcare)

I was afraid of that. I have an NVQ 3 in health and social care - but that has nothing to do with children! If I ask at my surestart centre will they give me a list of nurseries? Then I could go visit them and ask?

I was doing somemore research after I seen this thread and most the jobs round the Alfreton area ask for Level 3, you can do distance learning course for £300ish that will qualify you to that level. Most of them look quite good and obvs with a baby it can fit around family, depends how soon your wanting to go back to work

you will need at least a level 2 in childcare and education. But most nursries are asking for at least a level 3 beacuase all nursery nurse have to be a level 3 in the near future. My coure was a 2 year course but you can only do one year and get youe level 3 certficate level and you will be accpeted and payed as a level 3 nursery nurse

They wont acceot health and socail care because you havnt learnt about children their development etc. You also need to know how to do observation, plan around those observations and link them to the EYFS. Its a lot more complicated than peopl think its not just playing with and looking after children like most people think

If you are interested hun then you can get in conatct with your local college and they will point you in the right direction

You can proberly take your LO to the nursery with you and you would get a discount. You just wouldnt be able to work in the same room as your LO

Hey i work in a private nursery and i have a degree in early years and care and education so technically over qualified but i have learnt more in the past 7 months on the job than in my 3 years at uni. I was taught how to do observations but they were general ones and not ones that you need to do while working which is linking to the eyfs. You could familuarise your self with the eyfs by ordering one on line. They are free. This would really help. As for qualifications. There are people in my setting who have nvq's, btecs foundation degrees ETC. They have recently hired 3 members of staff who aren't qualified and are going to support them through gaining level 3. They have done this because they feel the person and there personal qualities out weigh qualifications. So it might be worth looking for nurseries that will do that. You will be able to take your child with you but ask about waiting lists for the specific room your child will go into. They might make exceptions for you as a worker but the waiting list at my nursery for a baby is 9 mnths so we have pregnant people looking around. Hope this has helped.

Thanks, I am going to look for some that will take me through level 3 whilst working. That's what I did at my job now too. I'm not doing another 3 years at uni that's for sure!
