Toast with no teeth.

Hi. I have been seeing a nurse about dexters eating for a while now. He has reflux so he is 9 months and behind with his food. Last week she said to try toast. Well he hasn't go any teeth So he sucks the toast and it seems to back up in his mouth lots of soggy toast and I sit there over half hour and he still hasn't eaten his three small strips of bread he has quater of a slice. Then when I offer his milk he gags as too much in his mouth then sometimes is sick. Is it to early for toast with no teeth? Thanks x

Hi hun

My lo can eat toast but only if it is very lightly toasted. He much prefers bread. White bread can also get a bit gloopy but wholemeal is better. Babies shouldn't have too much wholemeal (brown bread, brown rice/pasta etc) but if its just once a day its ok. 50/50 or best of both bread is good too if they have it where you are.

J x

thanks hun, I think the toast is getting stuck at the roof of the mouth as when I try to put my finger in to feel or to offer milk he gags and was badly sick today, i dont know if we have moved to fast as this is his first finger food he has really tried, maybe I should try something smaller until he gets the hang of it?

You can break it up into small pieces like the size of a pea and see how he gets on with it. Then make the pieces bigger once he's mastered each size if this makes sense? My 8½ month old can chew with her gums now, I let her gag a few times and this learnt her to chew the food first as she didn't like gagging on things. She's had no teeth up until yesterday but she manages it fine.

LO loves toast and he has no teeth. He sucks on it then eventually swallows but it took him some time to figure out how to move it around his mouth when it got stuck.
Maybe he just needs longer to figure it out..
I know if we've ever put our finger in his mouth when has food in it, he panics and it makes the gaggin worse.

Exactly this. My LO is still not keen on toast but never had any issue with bread, we always have wholemeal but we have white pasta, couscous and rice so thats ok. My LO didn't have any teeth until he was around 10 months (they took ages to come through properly) but he was eating chunks of meat, pasta, veggies etc from 6 months xx

Freya has no teeth but manages toast fingers - she sucks it until a small piece breaks off and then chews that with her gums! She's learnt to do that in a week - amazing how quick they learn! x

We're another loving toast with no teeth. Make sure it's nice and moist with butter/whatever to help stop sticking to the roof of the mouth.

I would also say that Organix snacks are really good early finger foods as they dissolve when sucked.

xXx

My boy has toast fingers with philly or marmite and when its stuck in the roof of his mouth he has learnt to put his finger in and get it off himself i was very impressed, it took him a while though and we started with him was sucking on a strip while i fed him small peices. Now hes mastered it and eats it by himself. Your lo will get there, it just takes loads of practice xx btw hes 9mths and still no teeth and he has been eating toast since 6mths xx
