Choking vs gagging

I gave my lo a rice cake yesterday and once he'd chewed it a bit he started coughing and watery eyes, face going red! I picked him up and patted his back and he stopped. I don't know if it.was choking or gagging but now I'm scared to carry on with bow, we've only been doing it a few days x

What do you think?

As long as LO can breathe then it's gagging and not choking and nothing at all to worry about

it was hard to tell whether he was breathing though!! That's before he coughed it up! Is it common for them to gag?

The difference is gagging is a noisy affair with coughing, spluttering and bringing food back up and can be accompanied by watery eyes etc. Real choking is a silent thing as baby cant breath therefore cant make any noise and they may turn red initially then bluiesh from lack of oxygen. Gagging is normal and part of learning to eat and swallow (can be a bit scary to watch though!).

Choking would be silent and they would be trying to suck in air. Gagging is more of a pushing out motion then in iykwim

I agree with the others - if he's coughing then he's breathing. Scary to see your LO like that though xx
