So worried I'm overfeeding

Earl is now on 2 meals a day. He has porridge with fruit puree for breakfast with some chunks of fruit to play with and much on. I started off with a small amount - 1 formula scoop made up with formula. I've found now that if I don't give him a reasonable breakfast he's hungry literally all day and will need an extra bottle in the day. So I have doubled up and now give him 2 forumula scoops of porridge made up with formula or water (depending on if he's left any from his previous bottle). At tea time I'll make up 4 cubes of veggies, and he'll have some veggies to play with and munch on, and he eats at least 3/4, if not all of it, before the meal finishes (eats with us at the table) but I'm so scared of over-feeding him. I've never managed to get him to give me any of the recognised 'full' cues like turning away, clamping mouth shut, spitting it straight back out again. He just keeps on eating. This is on top of 6x7oz bottles throughout the day (normal routine is 4,8,12,4,7,11). He's always been a big eater (used to have anything up to 56oz a day ), and I have noticed his apetite slowing on the milk front (normally leaves a couple of ounces a couple of times a day now, or he wont wake for the 4am feed on occasion) but I don't want him to replace mlk with food too soon. I'm pleased with how he's taken to his food, and it's made him much easier to live with in general, but I don't want to overfeed and cause problems in the future.

Thanks

Babies tend to be really, really hungry at that age! I'd ask your HV about amounts, if you've got a helpful one?

Thanks,

My HV isn't the most helpful. I called her to discuss weaning, and when she finally got back to me she actually said I probably should have started sooner (bearing in mind I started at 17 weeks and wouldn't have even considered giving him ANYTHING prior to this!) and then told me to try to limit his intake of milk - hmmmmm yeah ok missus! Oh and she hadn't even heard of BLW!

She also said that I should just 'follow that Hipp Guide thing' that we got through the post. That says 2-5tsps of puree 3x day. So hard to really know how much you're giving lol.....it's so messy! I'm tempted to just let him eat, but I don't want him to stop taking formula (not happened yet lol) and I don't want him to get bunged up/poorly. I think I'm going to keep going with the portions I'm on....may call the HV again in case I get a bit more help next time ....but my rule is normally 'as long as he's happy' and he's so much more happy now he's eating foods with M&D lol.

I'm in exactly the same position, I feel like I havn't got a clue what I'm doing... Aiden is eating SO much! I started him on baby rice about a week and a half ago, and now I have been adding purees to it - banana, apple, veggies etc - he has a breakfast and a tea - he eats all of this (I use 2 scoops of the formula rice aswell 'cos he just wanted more lol) plus the fruit.

For example, yesterday he had 3/4 of a banana along with the 2 scoops of rice for breakfast, pureed carrot and suede with rice for tea and 5 x 8oz bottles throughout the day!? Is this normal!? I am so worried I'm overfeeding... mind you, he is sleeping through now, he used to wake up for at least 1 more bottle through the night.

So yeh - sorry for taking over - but you're not alone in worrying about overfeeding!

My new and very nice HV assures me that you can't overfeed up until about 2 years old as they will just be sick and bring up anything that is too much.

I was the same as you but Georgia will stop when she has had enough, or if I really slow down she will stop 'shouting' and almost not notice when I stop.

Georgia has baby porridge in the mornings, 6 spoonfuls made with 6 spoonfuls of water, plus a 2oz cube of fruit.

At lunch she has 2x2oz cubes of something, either veggies or chicken plus some fruit if she wants.

At tea time 2 cubes plus some more fruit.

She has 3-4 bottles of milk through the day (8oz per bottle). A couple of times I used the jars when I was just starting on chicken and she took the full jar - thats 128g!!!!! I was astounded!!!!

Thanks guys -

Earl today had - his normal ration of porridge with 1 cube of peach puree in it (he loves his peachy porridge) lol and some toast fingers and grapes to suck on. Lunch was a yoghurt and some more fruit as well as a taster of my cheesy pasta (that went down well), and tea was 4 cubes of sweet potato with some gravy in, and then a couple of roasted carrots and a bit of Yorkshire pudding.

He had this aswell as 35oz of milk.

As you can tell we're sort of combo BLW with TW and it's working well, apart from the fact that I have no idea what's going in lol. Glad to know I'm not alone with the hungry LO...he just seems to do nothing but eat at the moment lol.

Lazy Leo - your HV sounds like a godsend
