When to give milk?

Hi - A quick question.

When should you give milk to your LO when introducing solids? I am currently breastfeeding and intend to carry on whilst I wean my LO but I am nervous that the timing of feeding will either mean he won't eat solids cos he's too full of milk, or worse, won't have his milk cos he's too full of solids!

How do other people do it?

What you could do is offer a small amount of milk first so that LO isn't starving, that way they are not going to get angry from being too hungry and can focus on eating the food. If they don't eat much food you can offer more milk afterwards.

Once they get to be eating a decent amount at each meal though you don't have to offer milk before - so long as you judge it right and they aren't too hungry they can just eat the food and have water afterwards. Or milk at another feeding time if not on 3 good sized meals in a day.

At first you might find it tricky to know exactly when is a good time to feed your baby food - so may end up just giving the whole feed as milk, becuase sometimes early on they do just get too tired or hungry to eat food.
It wont take long before you get it right though and offer food at the right time!

Do you think it would be ok to offer food at a different time to food - ie milk at 7am, food at 9am, or milk at 3pm food at 5pm?

Are you considering starting now, or soon?
If you are thinking of starting now/soon I would suggest the milk and food option..as they are still so young the milk is more important - and I think also if you are thinking of starting now I assume they are taking a fair amount of breast feeds? In which case probably for a while the food will not satisfy them as they don't really take much food at the start - so if they get milk too you know they will get enough in them.

Then after a while when they are taking decent amounts you could try them separate, so maybe milk when they wake and then at the next feed try just breakfast porridge or something - if they seem satisfied after that for a fair amount of time then it would be ok to think they are now eating enough at one mealtime to have just the food.
