Milk at 12+ months

Emma is 9 months now and I plan to BF until 12 months and then wean her. I asked at my BF group why there were 12+ formula milks as at 12 months you can move onto cows' milk. The nurse said it was just pure marketing and money making and that they were unnecessary.

I was just wondering about your experiences and thoughts and what you plan to do at 12 months?

Posting in the BF forum too

Cheers
lesley

Coming from a slightly different perspective as I had to FF Ruby but I agree with the nurse, that is definitely my understanding of toddler / growing up milks.
They are unnecessary if your LO eats a balanced diet.
My childminder gives her toddler growing up milk but that is because she is a very fussy eater and she may benefit from some of the extra nutrients.

Thanks Claire. It's all the same thing at 12 months though isn't it when you have to decide what to do next. I just wanted to see what other people were doing to get a full picture.

My LO is younger than yours, but for some reason I got the "weaning and beyond" talk from my HV when she was 6 weeks old

Anyways, (getting to the point), my HV said that you don't need to bother with any of the "Follow-on" milks - whether it's the stage 3 or the toddler ones. At least, not if your LO is having a balanced diet as well as their milk (be it breastmilk or formula).

It's just marketing, the formula companies are advertising what they're allowed to, as it gets their name out there.

Harry has follow-on milk... but then, he isn't a big eater and so I'd like to think he was getting extra calories/nutrients from the follow-on milk. I put cows milk in his foods, and he gets plenty of calcium etc through the things he eats. He won't drink cows milk though - he refuses to drink anything other than water, and only has milk (follow-on) at bedtime now.

I have no intention of using follow on milks. Abby will initially go on to soya milk until we see whether the dairy intolerance she has is going to affect her badly, then she'll get cows milk whenever she can. I remember watching that panorama programme which pointed out just how misleading the advertising for follow on milks are.

do we share HV's? Ours did the importance of teethbrushing at 6 weeks!

I was told that the only difference between the different types of formula milk is the amount of milk proteins they remove from it and tiny variations in the levels of added vitamins.

As most others have said after 6 months a balanced diet plus their ususal milk is fine and after 12 months cows milk is fine unless they have an allergy.

I'll only consider using a 12 months+ formula milk if Ryan is a particularly fussy eater - my mum tells me I was terrible and would only eat marmite and peanut butter sandwiches or corned beef and mashed potato when I was one!! Fingers crossed Ryan will inherit his dad's human dustbin-type appetite not my super fussy one.

Apparently so, I asked my HV this.
She also said that some babies don't like cow's milk at first in which case it's fine to offer half cow's and half formula in the bottle / cup...

You have to go with what your child needs..there is no right or wrong when it comes to amounts of food or milk and you can't over-feed an infant/toddler..they will let you know when they are full. If your child wants more, give it to him/her.Good luck, and go with the flow!
