How much milk at a year old?

Jack is now on cows milk but has been having 21 oz a day in three feeds, breakfast, afternoon about 2 and bedtime. However he's stopped eating his evening meal and just feeds half of it to the dog (which is steadily becoming obese ) Then he's waking at 9 hungry and needed a snack

So today I didn't give him his cup of milk at 2 I just gave him water. He drunk it all without messing and then ate more than me at tea time. He's still asleep now and doesn't appear to be gonna wake anytime soon.

Is 14 oz of milk enough or should he still be having the 2 o'clock cup

Thanks in advance for the advice

I'm not entirely sure but I would have thought 14oz is fine at a year. I know you shouldn't give too much cow's milk for the reasons you describe - it fills them up and spoils their appetite for other foods. I think my Ruby will go down to 14oz at around a year, I'll replace her 2pm milk with a solid snack.

Can't remember where I read it but I was looking up guideline minimum milk amounts yesterday and it was 20oz for 6months to 1 year then 12oz from 1 year. Might have been on the food standards agency website.

My son still BFs around 4/5 am, 1-2 times during the day, before bed and then 1-2 times at night. I am not sure how much milk he is getting though. I dont offer cows milk just 3 meals and a snack. He is a bit hit and miss with meals but generally eats pretty well.

Hi Claire.

Once you have start adding solids to his diet and his daily intake of formula milk should gradually decrease to about 720ml / 24oz. The Food Standards Agency recommends that once your baby is established on solids, he should be having approximately 600ml / 20oz or one pint of formula milk per day alongside a varied diet until he is a year old.
