Hopefully I would assume a multivitamin, getting sunshine and a diet with vitamin D should be enough, don't vitamins just pass in the urine if they're not used up? You can get a prescription for vitamin D for free when pregnant so may be worth asking what amounts they are.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and your body can store it unlike water soluable vitamins you pee out. It is possible to get too much so I would talk to your doctor about the right amount for you. That being said, it's great that you are being so proactive with taking vitamin D and prenatals! I wish more women planned ahead!

Thanks for this, my health visitor told me 'there's no such thing as too many vitamins' when I was asking if I should introduce multivitamins, but she also said he didn't need them when in fact in light of the recent vitmain D debate in the news apparently it's a government guideline to give pregnant/BF mums and babies under 5 vitamin D arrrrggghh so annoying!

The Vitamin D Research Council said that you would have to be taking in excess of 10,000 IUs per day to be anywhere near a toxicity level. I think the current recommendations are around 2000 IUs for pregnant women, and I think that's low. Some places are now revising to 5000 IUs.

My doc tests vitamin D levels right away. Good thing because mine came back deficient with a level of only 17! Yikes. I've been taking 5000 iu per day for a while now, but I'm still deficient. Vitamin D is so important, I may end up talking to the doc about increasing it.

I posted this in another thread, but I just read an article about how low levels of Vitamin D could be possibly linked to poor language development later on. But as Mom2mmcjg said, make sure to stay within the recommended dosage.

Here's the article: http://www.healthyus.com/blog/2012/0...n-d-follow-up/

You can take too many vitamins. Too much of anything, even water, can be toxic. It can also make you sick. Taking a prenatal or multi with a healthy diet that is filled with a wide range of healthy fats, veggies, fruits and fluids as well as sunlight should be enough for the average person. If you live in a place where you can rarely get outside then you might want to talk to your Doctor to get an added Vit D supplement. But I would not add one without speaking to a Doctor before, because it can make you sick.

Hi tinker I have ms so I know where you are coming from. Speak to your gp and explain to him/her. I found mine very helpful. Now if only I could remember to take them every day. Feel free to pm me or pop by my parenting journal.
