when to start taking folic acid?

We're going to start ttc in March 2010 - I am coming off the pill this week! Any ideas on when I should start to take this? Some sites say when ttc others as soon as coming off contraception.

not sure if comming of the contraception changes anything but i was told 3 months before and into your first 3 months of pregnancy.

My doctor told me to start taking it 3-6 months prior to TTC. Good luck!!

Doctors normally recommend 3 months before - I'm not TTC until June but I have been taking it since September (we arn't 100% careful with contraception now though) - I think the sooner the better really just to get into the habit of it and find out when it suits you best to take it. I found out that taking it first think in the morning makes me

so I have it after my dinner in the evening now

At least 3 months before you start to try and for the entire third trimester.

I started folic acid before I came off the pill and have been on it for 7 months now. I came off the pill 6 months before we planned to TTC and wanted to have been taking it in case of any 'accidents' that might have occurred!

Th nurse told me 3-6 months before starting to TTC. But she went on to saythat Folic acid is good for your hair and nails so you can take it for how ever long you want to befre hand and for at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
