Transfer to consultant led care

Not sure where to ask this question, in 1st tri or multiples really.

I have had a bit of a fight this week with the dr's referring me to the consultants, they said it was automatic and the unit at hosp said it wasnt ...you can imagine the rest, anyway, letter went out on wednesday so should get my first consultant app soon.

What should I expect to be different? I've never had care through consultant and I'm a bit freaked by the twins thing at the moment and I am desperate for some clarity on what to expect care wise from here on in.

Can anyone help me please? sorry, I know it all seems silly to ask but I feel a bit lost and very emotional at the mo!!

Thank you so much x

Hi Lindyloo!

I was told that transfer to consultant led care was automatic if you were expecting twins and it certainly was for me.
Do you know if your twins are identical or not? The reason I ask is (and I'm not sure if this is the same for all health authorities) but if your twins are non identical you will have a scan at 20 weeks and see the consultant afterwards and then be scanned every 4 weeks and see the consultant afterwards to discuss the results. If your twins are identical you will be scanned every 2 weeks from the beginning!

Don't be worried about consultant led care, all it really means is that the consulant will be in charge of your care and you will be seen at the hospital by them (or one of their colleagues)rather than by your community midwife in the clinic (although my community widwife continued to see me as well). I think that they just like to keep a closer eye on you as multiple pregnancies are obviously higher risk.

Good luck and let us know how you get on x

twobumps pretty much covered it lol! Don't worry about it, the consultant appointment are usually short and sweet and I still see my midwife xxx

I was with a consultant and depending on the type of twins you are carrying depends on what kind of care you get.
I had Non Identicals so I had scans at 12,20,28,32,36 (i only made it to 29 weeks lol) I had a consultantcy appointment after each scan, 12 weeks was just to make sure that i understood mainly what was to happen in my pregnancy, 20 weeks was to make sure I was feeling OK and I was also looked at by a trainee and after my 28 week scan she done a scan herself to make sure that the babies were all ok.

In one of your consultancy appointments they will discuss birthing with you. With twins you can automatically have a c section or you can try natural delivery.

Its just having a one to one carer rather than seeing a load of different doctors and midwives. It makes it easier for you as you dont have to repeat everything to everyone you meet.

And consultants are known as Mrs, Mr, and Ms never Dr lol..(apparently, well thats what mine told me when I called her Dr) x

Thank you for your responses, the sonographer couldnt tell us whether they were identical or fraternal, I was only 11 weeks at my 12 week scan so I have another one at 13+3 on Thursday this week when I hope they will tell me what they are and I'll know whether It'll be a 4 weekly visit or more regular and it's my nuchal too.

It really is nice knowing what's going to happen either way..thank you all again
