Scotsgal, my dad is a fraternal twin and I asked about this out of curiousity in my first year of nursing. The link is maternal, I could inherit my grans hyperovulation and have fraternal twins but my dad had no increased chance of having twins despite being a twin himself, his sisters might have had though and so could my daughters. If my dh had fraternal twins in HIS family our chance of having fraternal twins would not be increased.

Identical twins are a spontaneous occurance and not thought to be hereditary.

HTH.

I have wondered about this:

My father is a fraternal twin, and his twin sister has had twins.

I don't have any twin siblings, and I am the only girl in my family so I don't think my brothers will have twins.

I don't know whether there is twin history in my mum's side (she's not mentioned anything...) but I can't trace my Dad's mum back enough to see if there were other twins in generations back..

Do you think there's still the possibility that I may have inherited Dad's Mum's genes?

I worry a bit because I'm quite a small person (4'11 tall!) and the thought of two babies freaks me out a little bit

Thanks!

Hi everyone! I'm a medical geneticist, and can confirm that fraternal twinning is in fact largely based on genetic factors. Identical twinning on the other hand, is not. :-)

Thankyou. This is what i thought. However, I have heard that twins cannot be passed via the male side of the family. The only twins in my family are my Dad's Mum's sisters, if that makes sense? So my paternal Granndmother's sisters.

Could that be where mine 'came from'?
