There seems to be a bit of a difference in care with identicals and fraternals... I am getting really frustrated after my nuchal scan on Thursday confirmed that they are almost definite that they are sharing a placenta and there was a very thin membrane between them. I am hoping that they can confirm for sure at my 20 weeks scan which is actually at 22 weeks, I am just so impatient and worried that they are not going to be monitoring me enough should they be identical.

Let us know how you get on at your scan amandajane

I feel the same way! They've told me that I'm having mono/di babies yet the last scan to check anything other than hbs was at 12 weeks where they did find the membrane. My next scan is this Thursday and I'll be almost 22 weeks. I can't believe I've been waiting so long! I thought they'd be monitering me closer, but they told me they don't start monitering closely until after 28 weeks.

I feel the same ladies. I had my last scan at 12 weeks and they couldn't really tell me anything. They are going to look at it when i have my next scan in a month. I just hope that they are doing well. Wish all you they very best. xoxo

Yeah its a difference in care in UK I know that. Over here you get a scan at 12,20,28,32,36 weeks with Frats and 12,20,28,30,32,34,36 with identicals

I asked my consultant why it was that there was a huge gap between 12 and 20 week scans and then a big gap between 20 and 28 week scan and she said because in the first 12-20 weeks your babies are surrounded by as much protection and are still relatively tiny so other than scanning there isnt much they can do and a scan is just really to put the mothers mind at rest but all mothers not just multiple mothers would effectively deserve the right to have another scan! << Which I suppose is true!

Then she said between 20-28 weeks again there isnt much they can do. Movement is felt so a scan is not necessary unless there is a lack of movement and also babies born before 24 weeks are not medically given the right to life! at 28 weeks your care becomes more frequent because less room and the weight you are carrying makes you higher risk of having prems, which I was and did end up having two at 29 weeks!

it all makes sense, still, everyone tells you there is so much more risk but seem to do nothing about it!... I guess there isnt until after 24 weeks as you say.

Where abouts do you live? Maybe it changes depending on location. I am 16 weeks 5 days and im carrying identical twins who are in a bigsack with a thin membrane separating them. My first consultant led scan is tomorrow and i have been told that i will have scans and appointment with my consultant every two weeks because they are identical twins! Shouldnt be after 28 weeks if they are identical thats too late! With identical there is a risk of twin to twin transfusion sydrome which i believe can start as early as 16 weeks, so they should be scanning you way earlier that 28 weeks! i would talk to your consultant about this if i were you. Hope i havent worried you hun, sorry if i have, just seems like a long time to wait to me.

My hospital only scanned you from 28 weeks even with identicals!

Im really surprised at that. I was sent letters of several bookings for scans starting from 16 weeks onwards two weeks ago. First one is tomorrow. Maybe different areas have different regulations.

Most probably that is the case.. Just different areas different regulations.
If it were my decision I would scan multiple mums earlier on! My first scan after 20 weeks was 28 weeks and she said its the same for identicals too!!
