I always knew that when I started TTC, it will not come easy. My cycles are very irregular ranging from 40-60 days. When we decided to TTC 14 months ago, I went on a shopping spree and bought tons of OPKs, PG tests, Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor, BBT thermometer, and anything else that you can possibly need when you are TTC. I also bought a couple TTC books, one of which was the popular Take Charge of Your Fertility. I read it from cover to cover and it was really helpful in teaching me how to chart my cycles.
After charting several cycles, I find that I have long cycles, I have a 10 day LP phase, and I ovulate 50% of the time. I went to a doctor before but since I was 26 years old, the doctor said I had nothing to worry about. He can put me on BCP to "regulate my cycle" but I told him that I declined because we will be starting TTC soon. He said it was normal that women do not ovulate once in a while. But since I was not charting, I did not have any proof that I was not ovulating. So I got brushed off. Before my wedding I had a bleed for 45 days. The doctor (a different one) stopped it by putting me on BCP, which resulted in no periods for 5 months.
I after a few cycles of charting, I finally have proof that I was not ovulating regularly. Armed with this information, I went to a different doctor and he prescribed Clomid. He suspected I had PCOS but never did any tests to prove I did. He prescribed 50mg and had me come in on CD21 for progesterone tests. No ovulation. Before he can prescribe another I had to go in for an ultrasound to see if I had developed any cysts. I was then prescribed 100mg for the 2nd cycle and then 150mg for the third cycle. I did ovulate on the third cycle but by that time I was already referred to a Fertility Specialist.
The first appointment with the fertility specialist was mostly informational. He explained all the different reasons why I may not be ovulating. The first step is to come in for blood test on CD3. FSH, Estrogen, Prolactin, Testosterone, Thyroid Hormone, HIV, Hepatitis, and Glucose. I was given an ultrasound to see the shape of my uterus. After the meeting, we decided to go the IVF route since my insurance covers this. My husband also went time for some blood work and a semen analysis. We are quite happy to report that he is normal. He is very proud of his super sperm
I went in for a HSG test to check the shape of my uterus and to see if my tubes were opened. This test was not painful for me. It felt like a mild menstrual cramp. When they took the pictures, I immediately saw that my right tube had no flow. I asked the doctor if my right tube could have been blocked. She said that she had a hard time getting the dye to stay in, it kept leaking out. I went home I had a long cry on my husband's shoulder. The doctor called the next day and said that my results were inconclusive and to come in for another type of test. It’s called a Hysterosonogram and instead of dye and x-ray, they use saline and a sonogram. I will be doing that on July 25th.
I was informed by my doctor’s office yesterday that my insurance company will not cover IVF until I go through 3 cycles of IUI. I knew that this was going to happen because there was no reason for them to pay for the best treatment without having to go through the cheaper alternative first. I still feel very lucky and grateful that I have an insurance company that covers infertility treatments. I was supposed to start injectables on the July 28th. I am on BCP currently to suppress my ovaries. I hope that they can get my pre-authorization from my insurance to start IUI next week. It’s been a long and difficult journey. I am excited about my treatments to come but I don’t know how effective it would be since I have suspicions that my right tube is blocked.
I've met so many wonderful people on this board. Thank you all for being here for me and helping me through some tough times.
