?How does taking your BBT help TTC?

May sound daft but how does taking your temp every morning help with TTC?

I would of thought ovulation tests would be more accurate way of pinpointing things.

What am I not getting?

Thanks

Your BBT tells you when you're ovulating - if you have a temparature tip you're probably ovulating. And if your temps stay high after ovulation it is a good indicator that you could be pregnant. I don't temp but many girls here do so I'm sure they can be more specific with you about it.

hi grumpy moo! I'm new too - but I am starting to get a handle on BBT.

I have also joined fertilityfriend.com - and I would really recommend it. I've been charting my BBT, CM, as well as doing OPKs. My understanding is the once you have 3 consecutive raised temperatures on your chart you know for sure that you have ovulated. So - BBT does not predict ovulation as well as OPKs do - but they can confirm that it has happened.

Does that help? It is really up to you how much charting you want to do, but the more info you have the more sure of your fertile window you can be.

Good luck!!

It is really helpful as it can show you when you Ov & let you know how long your luteal phase is - so you know with a bit more accuracy exactly when your period is due

Eg - you might Ov a few days late but your LP should stay the same length which would then mean your period would be expected a few days later than usual (so it isnt actually late IYKWIM?) so in theory it saves you testing too early lol

Hope that makes sense? x

Thank you ladies. Is all much clearer now.

I am thinking of doing it but am worried that it will make me obsessive about things when I am trying to stay chilled.

What about you Ladies?

Its up to you hun, maybe you'd rather try the relaxed approach for a couple of cycles first? then if you dont have any luck you could try charting?

I personally would recommend joining Fertility friend & starting to chart coz its a lot easier than youd imagine & getting pregnant is a whole lot HARDER than youd imagine!

Charting makes you feel more in control of TTC instead of just sitting back & hoping you BD'd at the right time to give you a chance of conceiving x

Hi Grumpymoo! That's something I wondered too. Just to add to what the others have said, your OPK tells you that your body will probably ov in the next day or so, but by taking your temp, you can confirm it went through with it! You can get a pos OPK but then not actually ov, so by charting temps, mucous etc. you can double check. I too was worried about taking temps would make me a bit obsessive but once you start, it just becomes a habit and you don't give it too much though (most of the time!). Good luck

OPKs detect a surge in LH which normally occurs just before ovulation, you can sometimes have an LH surge without actually ovulating so you need to chart as well to make sure that you get the temp increase afterwards to be sure you did actually ovulate.

Some people get multiple surges in a cycle so if that was the case and you timed bd to our first positive opk result, but then didn't actually ovulate until say five days later when you had another surge then you might miss your egg! An LH surge without ovulation wouldnt result in a temp increase whereas an LH surge with a temp rise after would shouw that you had ov'd.

You still ned to do the OPKs to predict when to bd but you also need temps to be sure! I'm not actually sure if what I've writen will make sense - I'm a bit tired! check out www.fertilityfriend.com for a much clearer explanation of it all.

Personllay I don't find charting stressful, and DH is actually really interested in it too so he feels more involved.
