ovaries, fallopean tubes and cysts!

i went to the docs today for day 21 bloods (but on day 24 as have 31 day cycle!) and while i was there the doctor told me about the results of my last ultrasound. well it appears that i have some small cysyts on one of my ovaries (not sure which one as i think at this point dread set in!) any way she seemed to think nothing to worry about but would recommend referral to gyn at hospital, but as i have an appointment already for december she siad that would be fine. anyway one of the csyst she called a dermoid cyst which when they get removed are often found to have hair and teeth and other stuff in - anyway sounds really horrible

so what i am worried about is i have only one fallopean tube so what happens if the ovary that has the cysts on it is on my good side that still has a fallopean tube. am i doomed to get pregnet?

also i think she said something about on the scan its not always clear and the gyn will investigate more.

anyone got any good news re cysts?

sorry no idea how to spell cysts but going with this version!!

My sister had a cyst on her ovary. She only found this because she was pregnant and went for her scan and that's when they told her. They said she would need it removed which she had done whilst pregnant and her baby was born perfectly healthy (she's now 6). I think having a cyst on your ovary can make it more difficult to get pregnant but, again, I'm not sure. My sister said that her and her husband were trying for a year but they weren't trying trying, they just said "if it happens it happens".

hi... please dont be too dishearted.. my friend had some major problems with her general ovary womb area...

she had pcos and had about 2 periods a year.. they then discovered her right ovary and fallopian were dead so she had them removed... after this they found she had constant ovarian cysts and wasnt ovulating properly... she was told the remaining ovary and fallopian tube were also dying.. so chances or pregnancy were very slim even with ivf... her fiancee then had a testicluar cancer scare and was found to have very low sperm count so this lessened their chances even furthur.. was told a donor and ivf would be only option and still not very good chances... but............. she went in for a routine check up and had her 1 remaining tube flushed then fell pregnant within weeks NATURALLY!!! and against all odds she had got herslef pregnant the natural way and to top it off she had realesed 2 eggs which were both fertilised and now has 2 beautiful non identical twin boys!!

just goes to show that a little thing liek a cyst doesnt alwasy stand in the way of conceiving!! so please stay positive and put ur trust in mother nature.. as miracles do happen...

xx

Hiya,

Your post caught my eye as I was in the same boat although mine was not a dermoid cyst, it was a small orange sized cyst (functional) apparently on my left ovary. I had a laparoscopy (to check my system) and tubal dying (to make sure my fallopians were clear), in addition I had what was called an ovarian cystectomy (they removed the cyst at the same time as the laparoscopy), it worked out the cyst was under my left fallopian tube and was squashing it !! in addition I have about another 4-6 cysts under my right ovary but have been told that that is fine (will probably have another op later on) so please dont worry. The operation is very standard (its done in one day and you go home at about 3pm on the day), although slightly painful afterwards. I imagine that is what you will end up having and this does not hurt your chances of falling pregnant either (depending on what they find when they are in there). I have been told that next to PCOS and the cysts that I should be fine in conceiving !! As long as your tubes are clear and the ovaries are working then everything should be fine and it appears that they have located your cyst by way of scan nice and early so it should be able to be removed without the necessity of damaging any of your other reproductive organs.

Best of luck !!

TTx

Thank God that your cyst was discovered early- mine was so big, that i was starting to show! It looked like little babybump(only that it was more on one side than middle)
I had many cysts in both ovaries(one was as big as newborn babys head and the fallopean tube was wrapped over it) and had an operatian in june 2005. ONe of ovaries was cut split or something and one fallopean tube were damaged. The other ovary was ok, because cysts in it were small.

Doctor was positive about me having a baby natural way.
So we were trying to consive for 1,5 year and finally i get pregnant natural way in December 2006. Had no problems with pregnancy and my baby is completly healthy. She is 11,5 months old now.
I wish you luck and my fingers are crossed!
ps english is not my first language, so sorry for any misspelling. Hope you understand me

Hi Shoeshopper

There is lots of different bits to this question! Firstly not all cysts are the same. The commonest cysts are 'functional' cysts (as suffered by trickytrouble - and myself). These are thought to be a variation on normal (in terms of if you scanned all women midcycle, everyone would have a little cyst). However if they get much bigger (me and trickytrouble both in the orange-sized gang) then they can cause pain or other symptoms. Mine was left alone and went away by itself, but obviously an operation to remove just the cyst (and not the ovary. called a cystectomy) is possible if the body doesnt sort itself out or there are problems. (I think in very rare circumstances they can take the whole ovary but usually they try to preserve it).

The dermoid cysts are different to functional cysts. They arise from cells that can eventually become anything - hence why they have teeth and hair in them! I think these usually need removing as they wont go on their own accord. Usually this can be done by cystectomy again.

there are other causes of cysts too.

the main thing they warned me about when they found my cyst, was 'torsion'. this is where the ovary twists on its stem because of the big heavy cyst on it. this causes severe pain but also cuts the blood supply off to the ovary and requires emergency operation to sort it out (same thing can happen to mens testicle and is called testicular torsion). So they told me it was very uncommon, but that I would have to go to a+e if had bad pains.

patient.co.uk has a good ovarian cyst info sheet if you are interested.

I hope you get it all sorted out ok. x
