Nervous

I don't know, maybe this isn't the right section to post this, but, I don't really visit any of the other forums on this site, so, I thought I'd post it here.

I have a tumour. It is in my back. I have known about it for awhile. A co-worker found it when she gave me a massage a few months ago. Anyways, I saw my DR yesterday...the DR already knew about it from a previous visit....and they have to take it out. They said that it most likely is benign, but, it is causing me great pain and discomfort. It is right over my shoulder blade. So, anyways, the hospital phoned me today and left a message (I was out at the time) and they want to do it next week!!! I am so scared!!! I hope that I am pregnant this month, because then I won't have to get it done right now!

Come on BFP!

I know its scary but its better to get it out, and if its next week you wont be able to get yourself worked up for months worrying about it beforehand but fingers crossed for the BFP!

Poor you - must be frightening. Did they say what kind of tumour they thought it was? If your doctor already knew about it and hadn't done anything, the odds are it's a benign tumour i.e. one which won't do you any harm unless it presses on something it shouldn't. Malignant tumours and benign tumours feel very different and your doc must have not found any worrying signs. I'd hazard a guess that it's a lipoma, which is a benign fatty tumour (just loads of fat cells which go a bit crazy and get bigger to form a big lump of fat). Doctors can be pretty certain a lump is benign or not from feeling them but if you're getting pain, it's probably wise to get it removed so a) it can stop pressing on whatever nerves it's irritating and b) the guys in the lab can check out the sample and make sure it's nothing to worry about. If you are going to have it removed, what it entails 99.9% of the time is a local anaesthetic injection (just like when you go to the dentist) to numb the area and then they'll remove the tumour through a small incision. Good luck and try not to worry (though I know it's hard not to).

Yes, Holly...I am pretty sure they used teh word, "lipoma". They said it would be a 12cm incision, or thereabouts...and I will be awake. That is the part that terrifies me actually. I hate needles!! I know...I am being a baby... C'mon BFP!

Most people have a fear of needles - there's something very unnatural about having a bit of metal stuck in you! There's a very big 'fear of the unknown' factor too if you've not had anything like it before. Luckily, the local anaesthetic used for this kind of thing goes in quickly with a small needle and once that's in you won't feel anything. Most doctors will ask you if you can feel anything and test with the sharp end of a needle on your skin or similar and if you can still feel it, they'll put more in. There is limited data on the use of local anaesthetics in pregnant women (animal studies haven't demonstrated any risk) but if you did get your , your doc might or might not decide to delay it. At least when it's over with, you'll be able concentrate on more important things, like babies!
