I figured that if I'm not pg, then in the next week I'll surely have a visit from nasty old ... if not... then I'll go to the doctor, with DH in tow! | Mybe u should see if u can get another one. Im quite lucky as mine is nice |

Well, in March this year i fell pregnant... like I mentioned earlier I'd had a small bleed a week before AF was due. The bleed was heavy for the first day and really light the next, I'd called NHS Direct and asked them their advice and they said I could still be pregnant, but to test the following week when AF was due. So I did, and low and behold... I was so shocked... I tested again and I was definitely pregnant! I'd had tons of symptoms too and just knew that I was pregnant!
Anyway, so went to Doctors (we'd just moved house so he was a new doctor for me!) I explained why I'd come to see him. He asked when my last period was and I explained everything to him, he outright told me... you're not pregnant! I said to him that I'd taken TWO tests that said pregnant and had heard that most doctors take that as confirmed, he was confused about my dates and told me I tested too early... I tried again to explain to him that I tested on CD35... which is NOT early and it's exactly when the NHS Direct nurses suggested I test.
He gave up this line of attack, and took my blood pressure. I then told him that I had a very little bit of brown spotting which wasn't worrying me too much because every where I read, it said that you only really need worry if it's bright red, fresh blood. So he asks me... why would the spotting concern me?? I again said well it doesn't really, it's just the first time I'm pregnant, and hadn't experienced anything like it before... to which he said... why would the spotting concern me... (in fact he asked me the same question 3 times over.. obviously I wasn't giving him the answer he wanted...) finally he said.. Your worried you will miscarry.. I said that perhaps it was in the back of my mind... to which he said.. Well there's nothing we can do anyway and you're probably going to miscarry...
He ended up being right... but I left the GP's that day, not feeling excited because I was expecting my first child... but depressed and miserable. All he did while I was there was take my blood pressure and take a dictaphone message that would apparently be sent to the midwife. (No urine or blood tests)
I vowed to myself and DH that when we next fall pregant I will not go to the GP until I am at least 7 or 8 weeks and when I do, I'll be dragging DH with me for support!
When the time comes to go to the doctor, we may change doctors, or surgerys. xx | | | | Status: Offline

Did you make a complaint to the surgery? I would. This is totally unacceptable. |

I'm Currently Feeling: | I didn't actually ... I think if I had to talk to anyone at the time I would have burst into tears... I just got straight into my car, called Hubby...
I think we'll mention it if we change surgeries... we're actually trying to find a private care facility in our area... as we'll be happy to pay for better service.
Thanks for your comments Shifter... it's nice to know that I wasn't just being a big baby and I'm right to think he was out of order! xx | | | | Status: Offline

But bear in mind that paying doesn't guarantee a better bedside manner. I hope you find a good GP that you can develop a good relationship with though hun.
And yes, he was out of order. |

I might actually do that.. when I find out I'm pg (do you like the positive 'when' not 'if' ) I'll call up and arrange to see a woman doctor. She might be more empathetic.

Fair point, I think hubby is of the opinion that private is better... it comes from us having lived in South Africa for 20 years, most of the working population is on private medical aid, and the GP system is AWESOME! One thing I wish I could have put in my suitcase when we moved here was my doctor.
I'm sure we'll try again and see if we can get a better doctor before going down the private route, hopefully next time it'll all go a lot better! | | | | Status: Offline

It's going to depend a lot on what area you live and luck really. My local health centre is newly built, fantastic facilities, lots of GPs on staff and mine is wonderful. I know what you mean about wanting to pack your GP when you move, I feel like that now because hubby and I are moving from Bristol to Bradford at some point soon and I will *really* miss my Dr. |
