Maca anybody??

Hi all

Just wondered whether anyone ttc was using Maca? I have heard loads of good things about it, and just wondered if anyone here has any experience to share.

Maca powder is derived from a yam-like vegetable (it is not a herb) that grows at very high altitudes in the Peruvian mountains. It has been used for centuries by local people as a libido booster and fertility aid. Apparently it balances hormones, improves cm, egg quality and is also excellent for increasing men's sperm count/motility etc.

I have bought some powder and am thinking of using it in smoothies for OH and myself this month.

Anybody else used it?

Yaya xx

Haven't used it myself - didn't Inca warriors eat it before going into battle? Ooo-er! Hope it does the trick! xx

I never thought I'd find the stuff here in SA but happened to see it in the health shop so snapped it up. You can buy it online as well.

See here for a discussion about Maca:

Hi-I just bought some concentrated liquid Maca at Whole Foods. It was about 10USD.

30-50 drops in a little water. Just tried it today, also trying to get DH to try. Will see what happens. Also got Wild Yam but now reading some say it is like Clomid, others saying it actually can be used as birth control......WT?

You have to watch how much you take, sometimes the dose on the bottle can be too high for you and you can get side effects, it can actually speed up your cycle so if there is nothing wrong with it in the first place you could put it out of wack. Ive seen many articles where it recommends you start at about a quarter of the dose that is recommended and build up slowly over a few weeks as some people are more sensative to it than others. Its also got a lot of iron in it so you would have to watch if you are taking iron supplements whether its in a pre-natal or by itself as high iron levels can be toxic. Its also been known to stimulate graffian follicles in women and cause more frequent menstruation. Im always cautious about using things like this when ttc becaue you have no idea what effect it will have on your body and the last thing we want is to stuff up our cycles and delay conception more than we have to.

**ahhh.. good to know. That was the same conclusion I was coming to on the wild yam. Just so hard, ttc cycle 12. Just read that 90% of couples will get pregnant in the first year..........
