The "official" calculations say that you are 2 weeks pregnant when you conceive- it's a bit bizarre. Basically they count 40 weeks starting from the first day of your last period. But of course most ladies aren't fertile till around the middle of their cycle, so when you ov/conceive you are already in week 2. This system was obviously designed by idiotic men! So, count 40 weeks from your LMP and you get your due date - but most babies are not born on their due date!

To make life easier, just type your LMP into a due date calculator like this one:
http://www.babycenter.com/pregnancy-due-date-calculator. Even if you know the date you ov'd they don't use this in the calculation (please correct me if i'm wrong!)

They ask for the date your last period started and then count 41wks from there. This is due to them beleiving you OV 7days after your AF started. This personally makes no sense to me what so ever. I put in the date my last AF was 05/04 and they said I was 2wks gone. Which would make me 1wk pregnant before I OV'd!!!!!

If someone could shed some more light on this I would be grateful too!!! I don't need to know right now I might but AF not due until 03/05 so I could be who knows. This is soooooooo confusing.

That's right - like I said in the above post, the moment you conceive you are actually officially already about a week preggers. The problem is that in the past the only data they had was periods, so that's what they based the calculations on. 40 weeks from the LMP is average, but 1-2 of those weeks you won't have been fertile. This means it's technically impossible to be 1 week pregnant. Like I said, system was devised by men!

Now that we can pinpoint ov fairly well (well - I have failed so far, but I know some of you lot manage it!) we should be able to use a different system which calculates something like 38 weeks from ov- but then there would be two systems on the go and you woudn't be able to understand what anyone was on about! For example - If I use my LMP (let's say it was april 1st) then I would about 3 weeks pg since today is the 23rd. However if I knew I had ov'd on the 14th, then I would be just over 1 week pregnant. In reality, the fetus is just over one week, but in doctors' lingo, it's 3 weeks. Mad but true!

Just found this, which says it lot more clearly than I managed to do!

"Gestational age is the age of the pregnancy from the last normal menstrual period (LMP), and fetal age is the actual age of the growing baby. Most references to pregnancy are usually in gestational age rather than fetal age development"

To work out how far you are it's really simple - day one of pregnancy is the first day of your last period. I know it sounds silly to think of yourself as pregnant at that point. It would mean we were all pregnant for 2 weeks of every month. You're already about 2 weeks pregnant when you concieve.
