Anyone TTC with irregular periods? I'd love to hear from you!

Hi everyone. I've read several sites' message boards but have yet to ever post anything of my own. I wanted to share my situation with the hopes that there's someone out there with a similar experience and some helpful thoughts or advice...

Little background info... I was a bit of a late bloomer and started my first period at age 16. Six months went by without having another, so my doctor started me on birth control to get me regulated. I stayed on birth control (the pill) for 9+ years until last Feb. 2009 when I finally decided to stop taking it. I had heard and read that it can take some up to a year to resume a regular cycle, so I figured it would take my body a while to adjust and regulate. Just as I suspected, I have had a year of very irregular periods, with 4 or 5 since Feb 2009. I began doing acupuncture about 5 months ago which I think is helping to an extent, but certainly hasn't "corrected the problem".

Much to my surprise I actually found out in January that I was in fact pregnant, only to discover I was miscarrying shortly after. So I suppose the good news is, I'm ABLE to get pregnant, however my chances of doing so are cut seriously short by my lack of regular cycles. I do chart my BBT (which is what clued me in to the January pregnancy), but overall they tend to be fairly irratic in nature. I have yet to see a classic chart that looks like anything you see online.

My husband and I haven't really been actively trying as of yet, but rather just haven't been preventing. In a way I'm hesitant to even say that I am [I]trying out of fear that I will become continuously upset, disappointed, frustrated, and every other adjective you can attach to the feelings associated with it. Overall I'm a very healthy, happy person; I'm 26, 5'3'', 104 lbs, and no medical issues that I'm aware of. My doctor has done basic hormone level testing in the past, but there haven't been any red flags and things appear to be very normal. There's also no one in my family that I'm aware of that has had any issues getting pregnant (and in fact, seems to be the exact opposite with most of my family!)... so I can't help but feel that I'm "broken"

If there's anyone who has a similar experience, or has any thoughts, suggestions... anything... I would love to hear it!

Thank you in advance!

Just wanted to say hi! My story is similar to yours but slightly shorter as I only stopped bcp in October.

Again my periods started later than 'normal' when I was around 15. Then they came along every 3 months if I remember correctly. I went on bcp at 17 for 9 years and stopped them in October 09. Since then i've had one very light AF - more spotting and nothing since.

Doctors have run blood tests and all is normal so far so I have been referred for a scan in 3 weeks time.

I'm 27, 5ft 7in and 9 stone (don't know what that is in lbs!) and healthy with no other medical issues so I have no idea what is going on!

Starting to feel a little frustrated because we can't even really saying we are ttc when i'm not having 'normal' cycles.

I went for acupuncture recently for the first time and am going to keep going every other week if I can to see if this helps.

Hi there! I thought I'd throw my hat in as well. I'm 31, and went of BC in August of 09. I was on for about 10 years. I went on the pill because my periods were very irregular. Since coming off the pill, my cycles have been 36, 30, 34, 39, and 46 days. I've just started temping this past month (but I'm not good at taking it at the same time). I've had a chat with my gyn, who wants me to try opks for two months. I'm also headed in today to have an ultrasound to check for cysts. I thought I got a positive opk last Tuesday, but I think I got another one last night.

I'd love to hear from ladies who are dealing with irregular cycles.

Hi

Its seems im not the only one, i have irregular cycles also... Have gone a year without a single show at all. I stopped bcp over 3 years ago and have had ntnp attitude until recently where we decided to try properly. So I have started charting and taking Ovulex to help regulate me. this is my 1st month testing for OV and Im currently on cd45!!! which is very annoying but I suppose Ive gotta give it a try and have set a target to re-assess when i have been taking Ovulex for 3months.
Hopefully AF will visit within this time... However I know its hard to keep your chin up, I say the exact same thing to my partner 'Im Broken' which is weird to read someone else feels the same way.

I would suggest maybe considering taking something herbal to help regulate you as There are many things out there (as well as ovulex) and try not to be come comsumed by TCC as its take all the fun out of it, and stress is the worse thing for delaying AF I hear.

I will keeping an eye on you post and hope you all get a BFP soon..

Hi!

I just wanted to share my advice, don't feel you have to take it or anything!!

I have irregular cycles, anything from 44 - 65 days, I have been told I prob have PCOS. I am not overweight and don't have excessive hair which are the common symptoms.

I haven't told anyone we are TTC - it's a lot of pressure, without everyone constantly asking. I also think it's a lovely surprise to friends and family if they're not expecting it!

I temp, and use OPKs, I started just to check I was actually ovulating, but now I think I will carry on. Because my cycles are really long I don't want to miss any opportunities! So I think continuing with your BBT is a good plan.

I don't tell my OH when I am ovulating, because it's too much pressure for him to 'perform'. Quite a few of the ladies on here say their OHs don't like to be told that it's baby making time! So I keep it to myself and I find that helps.
Of course it depends what your OH is like, he might like to be involved in all of it...

I know it all seems a bit like you're on your own then, but that's what B&B is for! There's always someone to talk to, ask questions or to listen if you just need a rant!

Good luck!x x x

Hi huni Well i was the opposite i was a very early starter, 8 years of age. But they would come and go sometimes i wouldnt have one for 12 months and then id bleed for a whole month.
When i was 14 they kinda come every month but id bleed for a 3 weeks have a 1 week break then bleed again for another 3. Sometimes they were that bad id spend a week in hospital cause i was just so drained from the blood loss.
When i was 15 they started doing test on me to find out what was going on and for 2 years they found nothing but eventually discovered i had pcos. I was put on BC but decided to come off it after 6 months cause it just made me ill.

If doctors actually told you the long term effects of BC no woman would ever take them. They just mess with your body.

Been trying for a baby since 07 now. Its so stressful at times cause all we want is a bump. But hopefully now i have started clomid things will start to look up for me.

Other than BC have you tried or looked into anything to try and regulate your AF. I was taking a herbal tablet called agnus cactus which gave me a 28 day cycle every month, which was brilliant but i didnt ovulate cause of the pcos so i stopped taking it. Maybe you could try it?

Sorry about the miscarrage huni tahts could cause your periods to be more irratic to the herbal stuff may help with that.

Hope this helps ya a little

xx

Oh Im in a similar boat too! I stopped bcp October 2009 and had random spotting in November and December and then a proper heavy af in January. Today is CD36 and nothing!!! Not even a sign of a period.

I know how frustrating it feels! My hubby doesn't quite get the idea that we have been "trying" for 5 months now and in just over 6 months we'd be classified as an "infertile couple"!! And the trouble is that, like you, we can't even try properly as I don't have a cycle

I tried using OPKs and thought I got obvious positives but 14 days after didn't get af or a bfp, which obviously means I didn't ovulate then.

I also had a blood test done which came back all normal and the dr didn't feel it was necessary for me to have a scan. She also said that they won't run any more tests till it's been a year

So I wish I had some advice for you, hon, but Im afraid Im in the same boat - just waiting and getting more and more dperessed
