I have heavy clotty periods as well, and was told by my obgyn not to use tampons during the days that I get clots.

You can also try taking asprin for the days leading up to the periods to help thin out your blood.
Use a softcup, moon cup, or pads for periods rather than a tampon.
I like the soft cups because you can throw them out, and you can use them during TTC to keep sperm by your cervix for 12 hours after bd as well. A moon cup will work for periods but it won't work for keeping sperm by your cervix, since it uses suction and sits lower in your vagina.

anyway good luck

Don't use tampons during the clots?? No fair. My last period I clotted for 6 days. I have to use tampons AND pads otherwise I bleed through within minutes. But then, I have iron issues and have to go for retesting.

My doctor never said anything to me about it so for now I'm going to stick with my tampons. I used to never wear them just because I couldn't figure them out and I ruined all my clothes and blankets every month. I'm gonna stick with them for now.

This is kind of unrelated, but I'm glad you posted this. It took me FOREVER to figure out how tampons worked, and I always felt alone. Like I was a defective girl or something.

I used to have loads of clots when I used tampons. Since switching to a mix of Mooncup and cloth pads I don't get any.

I've been using them since I was in my mid twenties and I've never been pregnant. I stopped for a while when I had a coil as I was a bit worried about suctioning the darned thing out.

The main thing is getting of the squick factor. I remember first hearing about them and thinking 'WTF you want my to stick something rubber in my vagina, leave it there to catch some blood, empty it out and then stick it back in again! Are you ruttin' crazy?' but I'd slowly got more frustrated with tampons causing me cramps etc that I eventually gave them a try. Once I had got the habit of folding them right, it wasn't even uncomfortable to pop in, and I've found that since toning up my pelvic floor, they are really easy to pop out as well as I can kind of 'push down' on it to get it as low as possible, then slide my finger out the side to break the suction.

It's also worth looking at cloth pads as they don't give off the same smell as plastic ones which heat up your nether regions and cause rapid bacterial growth.
