When I was in high school they disappeared for almost 2 years. At the time I obviously wasn't worried about it because of being a teen and I was tested for all sorts at the time and all they kept telling me was stress, stress, stress ..They came back all of a sudden one day but the doctors never ever gave me a reason to why they vanished for almost 2 years. They have been 'almost' regular now. They are annoying me at the moment though because I've been skipping months for the last few months, like having period, skipping a month then having period again ..they can be soo annoying ..but I'd definitely get checked out properly xx

My gp last week said it might be stress but i'm not stressed untill i get to the surgery and realise they are not going to help again.

The next person to say it's strees is going to get a big slap!!!

All i want is an answer but even fertility treatment in hard without AF and plus they have said we are not able to get funding on the nhs but without a diagnosis private IVF will be even more expensive.
I can't stand it when Doctors use stress lightly for a diagnoses it shows how incompetent they're.... Seriously it's a pet peeve of mine. You would have to be under a serious amount of stress for it to consistently effect your menses for 13 months. Even then if its "STRESS" and 13 months of it, it should interfere with other systems like your digestive system. 13 months of "real" stress should show its ugly face in the form or depression and anxiety, your body weight would have changed even if its slightly. Silly stupid doctor... I'm sure sometimes doctors use the word "Stress" because they can't be bothered finding the cause and use it as an scapegoat. I wish Doctors would wake up and understand that stress is real its a symptom not a diagnoses.

Sorry for the rant hun, I really feel for your situation and hope that your next Doctor has a brain. I have my fingers crossed for you!

I should also add to my experience of this I was around 30 at the time when it happened to me.

The only other reasons I can think of why it happened to me was that:-

I was slightly obese at the time, about 1 and a half stone overweight which is clinically classed as obese. I know lots of people who are really heavy but their periods are never affected by it.

Towards second half of the 9months I was working on a waste water plant and kept taking bugs so it could be argued that my body was run down but that doesn't explain the first 4 or 5 months with no AF - or the rest of the year that I was there and continued to take bugs - again a colleuge who was also working in a similar environment managed to get pregnant although for health and safetly reasons she was moved to a diffrent part of the company.

And the other reason would be that I started to stress over it and worry that their was something wrong with me. Which could explain why with in a few weeks of being told my hormones were ok and not to worry AF appeared.

I know people are very sceptical when Drs mention stress and say but they don't feel stressed. I never feel stressed nor did I never used to lie awake in bed at night worrying over exams or work. But I could guarent that around exam times my period would go from averaging about 6 weeks to being closer to 10 or 12 weeks.

The reason stress affects AF is that in the past the things that would cause stress were related to their survival, things like threat of attack, lack of food, shelter, lack of sleep etc. If your survival is under threat it would not be good for a woman to be pregnant it would make her more vunerable and of course if a woman is under stress from struggling to feed or shelter herself why would she want the additional hastle or stress of protecting a newborn whos survial chances are already reduced. Nature has it that it is better for both to wait until the threat is over before she becomes pregnant. Providing both the mother and baby the best chance of surival.

Your body cannot tell the diffrence between real threats of survivial type stress or the stresses of modern day living and the pace of which we live our lives, going from work, to the gym, home to do housework, paying bills, stress at work meeting targets, the grump boss, worrying about where AF has gone having the perfect house, having the perfect family, wanting things now, wanting the perfect body with no fat reserves, etc those are all things that make your body go Stop I can cope with this but I can't cope with more ie pregnancy, it doesn't know that you can stop the gym or cut back the overtime because your pregnant, it just thinks I can't take any more stress.

I didn't mean to write such a long post but what I am saying it please try not to get stressed over it, easier said than done esp when you are ttc, and think about the other ways you are putting yourself under stress & presure AF will come back in her own time but the more you worry about it and doubt the Dr the more mother nature will say "your too stressed to have a baby"

Good Luck
