Can a neg blood test be wrong? (new here)

Hi all,

I hope you don't mind me posting on the forum, as I am not ttc, but I think I might be pregnant, and could really do with some advice...

Firstly the reason it is so important to me to know is that I have arthritis, and I have stopped taking the meds for it in case I am preg, but I am getting quite sore without them... sorry this will be long - hope someone can stick with it!

I started my last period on 15th Jan, a fairly normal period, and my periods have been very regular at 27 -29 days without fail (though Dec and Jan periods were both very short, and in November I had spotting throughout the month, took this to be because of stress as I moved in November).

This month, we had sex on 23rd Jan, and although I didn't pay too much attention at the time to exactly when, I know my breasts got bigger and very sore shortly after then, and that has stayed. My partner noticed that I had been complaining a lot about feeling sick after eating and so early last week the penny dropped and I took a pg test - neg. I knew it might still be quite early so I called the docs and because of the meds she called me in for a blood test on Thurs (4th), it came back negative. A different doc rang to tell me it was neg, so I asked him if it could be false neg, and he said no, it was showing at a level of "1" which is very low, but the tests are accurate.

I have been preg before (have a 3yr old) and tho the memory has dimmed over time, am sure the way I am feeling is quite familiar.

I have taken a First Response brand pregnancy test yesterday and today first pee and both def negative.

I am due on on Thursday/Friday this week, and still having symptoms:

Period type pains (last 2-3 days)
Tired really early in the day, hard to settle to sleep
feeling sick on and off (though this has settled down somewhat)
my boobs are still bigger (though in the last 24hours they have become less sore, and feel a little less full)
aches and pains in boobs
funny taste in mouth on and off (faintly metallic - it was when I had my dd)
I have also had v high libido (tho this is lessening as well I think)
I have been much less moody than I normally am premenstrually, tho a little more tearful.

Does anyone have any advice? I know the thing to do would be go back to the docs, but he said that I should go back on my meds, since the blood test came back neg, but I haven't done, as I just can't shake the idea I am preg?

I have done a few searches on the internet and lots of people seem to suggest this is caused by desperately wanting to be pregnant, and creating symptoms, but am really quite ambivalent about it.

Thanks for reading such a long post if you have got so far! I hope it makes sense...

Thanks

I would have to say the bloods taken on the 4th were accurate, if the sex you had on the 23rd of Jan was around when you ovulated and resulted in pregnancy then you would have been roughly 12 days past ovulation when the bloods were taken and ther would have been hcg in your blood by then if you were pregnant. There are rare cases where it doesnt, but they are really rare. Even if you ovulated a bit later, and you would have to if your cycle started on the 15th, there still would have been hcg in your blood, by the time you get preg symtoms the hcg is already being produced. If your worried can you wait till you period is due and if it doesnt show go back to have it checked again?

Hi nublue.

What kind of arthritis do you have and what are you taking?

I have Rh. Arthritis and take Mobic (Meloxicam 15mg) daily. My doctor told me to continue to take them until I get a positive test and then discontinue them. He is hopeful that pregnancy will stop/relieve/reverse my arthritis as pregnancy loosens and lubricates the joints. I hope so!

Good luck to you, I wouldn't worry about your medication until you get a positive test. Bloods are pretty conclusive, especially as your level was a 1. If your period doesn't come, then maybe have another test.

I don't think the blood test was wrong.
I think you aren't pregnant.
But if you feel you are, then you should go have another test.

Good luck!
