we are aiming for £1000 by the time we ttc and then hopefully £2000 by the time the lo comes along - that will cover my side of the bills while i'm on maternity leave as i'm self employed and the baby bits we will need - i'm going 2nd hand ebay, freecycle for most of my stuff

xx

We had around 7k before baby came along. We bought a lot of things new or nearly new from eBay so saved a hell of a lot. We've continued to save so have actually wound up with more than that now. But we're big savers anyway, terrified about pensions etc.

4k will be plenty, I'd say you need at least 2k though.

Me and hubby each put £200 a month into a savings account every month I was pregnant, so totalled about 3.5K and every penny of it has been spent on baby stuff and there's still other things I would have liked to get if I'd had a bit more money.

Like alot of the other girls have said £4000 is plenty. Me and OH are also "going with the flow" although I have a savings account with over £1000 in there already that we are not spending and keeping aside for a baby. We also have a fair ammount of spare money a month, we put a little if not half of that into my savings account each month and the rest goes on ourselves for now but when the time comes all the money we have spare will go for saving

You're all making me feel so poor. I've forgotten what it's like to have savings. After 11 months of TTC I've just booked a holiday, so am now in more debt.

well were kinda go with the flow ppl.. well i say i am.. but we did save about 2000 for the things u get when u have your first like a crib, buggy etc... and if and when i get a sticky bfp we will get clothes along with the pregnancy.. and i plan to shop for nappies and baby wipes from 6months or so on like every week pick up a pack.. so then when the baby comes i dont have to worry about that sort of stuff at all ... just gotta get a bfp now lol

I am going to be concentrating on building up our savings anyway, for a baby or anything else that may come our way

I am in the process of buying a house, supposed to close at the end of February. One thing that's awesome is the current tax credit available from the US govt, I will be getting $8000. A lot of people just go out and spend all of it on stuff for their home. I am definitely putting $5000 into savings immediately - I will be using the rest to buy things for the house that we need or have wanted for a long time. (Time to upgrade from these hand-me-down couches!!) That was a big deciding factor in whether to buy or not, since I don't really have any savings ATM. It's like, hey - instant $5000 emergency fund! Not too shabby.

After that, I am going to be controlling our finances and making savings a priority... even if it's only $10 a paycheck, something must go in for every paycheck (and I think we could actually do more than that). So even if I'm not "officially" saving for a baby, it will certainly come in handy when the time comes!!

we've got a savings account that we set up about a month before we started ttc, we've got around £1400 so far and also have a piggy bank for the days when we have spare change hats starting to build up, £4000 sounds like a good budget to me the more the better but 4000 definitely enough to buy all the important things xx

We are not going to save until actually conceive. Could be a long journey for us, so to make the ride more pleasant we are using our disposable income for fabby holidays and luxuries. Once I conceive we can afford to put about £1000 a month away comfortably, so should have about £8000 when baby comes.

from experience hun savings will sure make things a little easier but its spent in next to no time. Even without savings with my first child we had no problems getting everything we needed (and lots of stuff I thought i'd need and never used) 9 months is a fairly long time and if you get things each week it doesn't seem like a big pay out. After the baby is here you just get used to the lesser money. Hard to imagine how but you do just manage! I'd say you seem very sensible people and you have given yourselves a good start with savings so you have nothing to worry about! xx

p.s you will be surprised at how much people want to buy you when you are about to have a baby! especially the Nan's and the grandads if you are lucky enough to have your parents around x
