Men can Breastfeed.

I never knew men could breastfeed.
One of my FB friends showed me a article where there was a man that actually had to breastfeed after his wife died during child birth. I have never heard of anything like this. hmmm.....

Yeah, I read about this years ago. Pretty weird.
Adoptive moms (who have never had biological children) can also induce lactation and breastfeed their babies, and many do.
They take hormones, use a breast pump, and eventually, they begin to produce some milk.
They don't typically produce enough to constitute the child's entire nourishment, however (nor do men) and the baby's diet will have to be supplemented with formula.

Still, I think it's great. Even a little breastmilk is better for babies than none at all, and anything that helps folks bond with their little ones is okay, in my book.

Well, what makes us mammals is our mammary glands. So men have them as well. Though what would spur lactation would be a drop in dopamine or certain drugs. So most likely what causes a man to lactate after the death of his wife would be the trauma of the death itself. The interesting thing about dopamine is that when it fluctuates mesolimbic pathway, it makes the subject more prone to creativity. Which is why so many people find artists to be strange. It is the same kind of fluctuation often causes mood disorders.

It would be a very extraordinary man who would feel secure enough about his sexuality to induce lactation, especially in light of the accompanying side effects (breast enlargement, etc).

Even my enlightened OH, who's not exactly a "manly man" and who has been known to have an affinity for girly things from time to time, said "Gross! That's just sick" when I showed him a picture of a man breastfeeding.
He went on to say, half jokingly, that he wanted to kick that man's ass, so I'm pretty sure that he found the idea threatening in some way.
Perhaps he's afraid that all women are now going to insist that men breastfeed or something; I have no idea.

Men are funny.

Hahahaha that's great. Dustin Hoffman said that he wanted to breast feed.

My OH thought it was weird until we read an article about it in the guardian, don't think he'd actually try it though

I think this could be a lovely way for fathers to bond with their new babies. Not necessarily lactating, but suckling their nipples like a dummy, to comfort etc. I like the idea, wonder what my OH will think... (to be honest I think he'll love it.)

I love it too, but I had to laugh at the idea of a baby "suckling" on my husband's nipples.
The poor child would be gagging up hairballs. lol!
