Anyone with a underactive thyroid?

Hi everyone

I am ttc & wanted to get any feedback from anyone who has a underactive thryroid, I am taking 150mgs levothyroxine a day & have seen some information that once you become pg it has to be increased?

I was told by my doctor when it does happen then I will have to get bloods taken to make sure I am on the right dose, but I am concerned that there would be a week or more wait to get the results back and that my bubs wouldn't be getting enough?

Again I don't want to increase without my doctors approval but can't help this would cause me to mc again (Had a mmc last July)

Any advice would be gratefully received x

Hi there!

I had thyroid cancer and a thyroidectomy in September 2007, so I am definitely hypo. Nice to meet a someone else ttc that is hypo but I feel for ya! My endocrinologist told me the same thing- that once I have a positive pregnancy test they will test my levels and likely increase my levothyroxine (I'm on 112 mcg). I agree, it is a little nerve wracking to have to make the blood test appointment, wait for results, and then wait for the new prescription. But I'm so busy focusing on ttc (this is my 9th cycle) that I figure I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. My endo did tell me that you definitely don't want to be hyper in expectation of getting preggers because it increases the likelihood of a miscarriage.

Best wishes,

Jaimie

The good news is not everyone needs to have it increased so don't fret you may be missing out! Your midwife will probably take your bloods @ your booking in appointment. Also if you are worried, as soon as you know you are pg you could see your regular gp and ask for a blood test?

I am at 12 weeks now and haven't needed to have it done yet but my other friend had hers increased @ 12 weeks and it stabilised at that.

Probably not a very helpful answer after all that....lol.....just wanted to say not to worry - confirm pregnancy as early as poss and am sure your gp will do tests if he is worried about your levels

Hi

I also have an underactive thyroid and only found out last year after coming off the pill as my periods did not come back until my doctor found out about the thyroid issue and gave me the meds for it. I am also a bit worried about the same thing as my doctor said as soon as i knew i was pregnant i needed to go straight back in for the bloods to be done to up the meds.

Thanks for the advice though pink and fluffy as this is nice to hear that not everyone has to have it increased and also congrats on your little bean, I dont want to sound too cheeky but do you mind me asking how long you were trying for before you got caught because I have also read that having an underactive thyroid can lower your chances of getting a BFP and I've been really worried about this as Ive been trying for 7 months now?

xx

Not at all hun - we were trying for 6 months - however I have been stable/on the same dose of meds for around 7 years. I heard that it can affect TTC if it is not regulated properly, so I don't know if the fact you only had it recently spotted may have delayed it? In which case would hope you will be joining first tri soon lol - much sticky dust to you My friend who also has an underactive thyroid was trying for a year and she is due any day now

If you are worried it never hurts to ask your gp - I had my dose checked fairly regularly.

Am always happy to chat/answer any Q's too

Thanks thats a great help, my levels have just come back into the normal range and I dont have to have them checked again until march and then it will be every year if they remain the same. My cycles are also reducing every month as they are on the long side so im hoping this is also because of the correct med amount. Thanks again x

Hi Tierney

We were trying from Oct/Nov 2008 & I didn't fall pg until May 09, I did worry about the level being not right, however in April I went for my last bloods & it was regulated and bingo in May we had our BFP, sadly though it wasn't meant to be & I had a mmc in July, it took about 6 weeks to get back to normal & we've been trying ever since.
I am sure it will happen for us soon, a lot of friends have just announced their pregnancies & I am sure God will be blessing me very soon!

Good luck & please keep in touch! x

im also hypo/underactive.

had a mc in December at 7wks, and i knew there was something wrong with me that caused it. MIL noticed a few days afterwards that my neck was swollen and said it could be thyroid. the good thing was, that had been our first month of properly ttc, so that was slightly positive that we'd caught that quick.

i was only diagnosed on friday, and told we should wait to ttc until my levels come back normal, which they said would be around 3 months, and we shouldnt try before because its likely we would have another mc, which tbh i couldnt face, so we will be waiting!

as ive only just started on it, im only on 50mcg a day at the moment, so i dont know if thats likely to go up?
