Hi girls, can I join your GI group!

So it hasn't been confirmed yet that I have PCOS, but the doctor seems to think I have and I will be getting some tests and possibly Clomid.

So obviously I want to do everything I can and stumbled on your post and thought it sounded interesting!

Randomly, I have a little GI book at home (no idea where it came from!) so I am going to start GI diet this week. I am not overweight, I just calculated my BMI and it's 20 - I don't want to lose any weight but I eat loads so I don't think I will. This is the book on Amazon If you want to get a GI book I'd recommend it because it's tiny, fit in your handbag so you can always have it with you.

So just looking through the book - NO POTATOES???!!!! WTF?! I don't know if I can do it, I love potatoes - so does OH. We have potatoes of some variety at least every other day - OMG!! I'm going to try not to eat them for 2 weeks, then see how I feel. If I feel better I might be able to live with it! And I love sweets

I find i become really irritable if I haven't eaten for a few hours, so I hope this will help?

I'm interested to see if people feel the effects of the GI so keep us updated!

x x

Hiya,

I still eat potatoes, but just new potatoes or sweet potatoes, but I make sure I only have 2 or 3 new potatoes. I think its important to include carbs, obviously complex carbs are better but Id have potatoes over no carbs at a meal, or even a slice of wholegrain bread instead if necessary.

In pregnancy I got very irritable too if hungry or hadnt eaten for a while, so carried low gi snacks and ate some bigger portions so my sugar levels didnt drop too low. I seemed to suffer with low blood sugar in pregnancy as opposed to high! DS also arrived with low blood sugar levels too.

I really must get back on the proper low gi diet, just keep reminding myself that it will be worth it, to get pregnant and to continue in pregnancy, Im a sucker for chocolate though, hence the name!

I think I can cope with just having new potatoes, or just cutting down on how many I have with a meal...
I'm lucky I'm not really bothered by chocolate! I can take it or leave it... But sweets I love! Maybe I could still have the odd one...

Hi girls,

I too am underweight with PCOS. I will be going to the infertility clinic for a scan next month and hopefully we will charge ahead with some help! This low GI diet sounds great, but oh do I LOVE my comfort food! It sounds as though my cottage pies, lasagne, curries and rice may be out...but I don't think I could survive! Plus, I can't eat raw vegetables; they're too hard on my digestive system, so this healthy diet thing is going to take some work.

Well I'll start out little by little and see where it takes me! Good luck to all of you!

Hi you don't need to cut out rice and pasta altogether, you just need to change the type that you eat e.g. basmati rice or long grain rice instead of the short grain / boil in the bag stuff. The same for pasta, durhum wheat pasta and the thicker pastas do not release as much sugar as others. Please don't panic, it isn't that bad being on a GI Diet, just make sure you get a good up-to-date guide for what foods you can eat, it will surprise you as it's not as limiting as some people perceive.

But yes, potatoes are a no no, apart from sweet potatoes which are in the middle zone. I'm not sure about new potatoes.

Good luck!

Hi Ladies,
I'm thinking of giving the Gi diet a go. I have PCOS was told when I was 15 now 28. We have been TTC for 14 months and are currently with a fertility specialist. I wish I was under weight though. I'm not over weight according to the doctors but I think I could do with losing half a stone which has slowly creeped on since our wedding in June 09. I'd love to be able to not touch bread and potatoes, I think it's going to be hard lol. I could do with being hypnotised lol

I know exactly how you feel - potatoes are my emergency food when I can't be arsed to make anything else!! I'm going to order that little book (a bargain at £2.75, I see!) but I am a bit worried that I might lose more weight... I'm only 7 stone (although am short and of very small build) and I don't know if this is adding to the infertility.

I guess I should do the sensible thing and just wait to see what the fertility clinic say when we go on 2nd March but I want to do everything I can that might help me.

I've also been taking Vit C, Zinc and complex B-Vits for a few weeks now - in answer to an earlier question I have quite a spotty back most of the time so hopefully this might clear up soon with the vitamins and when I start eating healthily.

I'm already rubbish though - I started this thread a while ago and haven't really stuck to the low-GI thing - ! Am off to the supermarket in a minute though and am going to buy lots of the things listed earlier in the thread!

I am currently trying to stick to a low GI diet.
I suspect that I have PCOS but never had it confirmed. I am currently about a stone over weight and put weight on very easily.
A couple of years ago I managed to loose my spare stone and kept it of for a while and I felt great and I am sure my cycle was much more regular then. But since last summer, working away from home and a period of unemployment mean that I have put the stone back on but now trying to loose it again.

I need to get to the shops before I can start my Low GI! I don't have the right food in the house, so far today all I've eaten is very high GI stuff!

I have also found since I came off BCP I have had a spotty back, it's hardly any spots, like 3 or 4, but they are really persistant and don't seem to go away... weird...

Well I had my first fertility clinic appointment today st the PRUH in Orpington and while DH is feeling very positive about things, I have just had a little scared .

She said that it was pretty evident that my problem is polycystic ovaries and that she planned to put me straight on Clomid. She sent me for further blood tests today and gave me some tablets which will bring on my period as I'm currently on about day 50! Once that starts I have to call the hospital to make an appointment for an HSG to see if my tubes are blocked. If they are not, then I go straight on the Clomid following my next appointment at the end of April.

I was all fine with this until I did the stupid thing of reading up about the HSG procedure online... Most people said it is fine and you just get a periody pain, but a few others said it was agony and that they passed out with the pain... I'm not the bravest girl in the world and I am now scared stiff. I know that the pain only really happens if your tubes are blocked as the dye can't get through, and that blocked tubes are quite unusual, but I always assume that the worst thing will happen to me.

Anyway, just thought I would update you in case any of you have your first fertility clinic appts coming up.

Hope you are all doing ok - keep me posted with your TTC news!

Vee
