Did I give the wrong advice?

A friend of mine has been TTCing for 8 months. She has a 5 year old daughter and the father of her DD is not the same as her current DH.

She told me the other day that they have been TTCing for 8 months, just winging it. She was surprised she was not pregnant by now since she already has a child. She and her DH both smoke and drink alcohol almost every weekend. She is overweight but not by much maybe 30 pounds. She asked if she should call the DR and be concerned.

I told her it take healthy couples 12 months to conceive and she should try charting. She blew off the charting idea that she did not want it to become obessive (I have no idea what she means by that )

I also told her not to worry about it, but she thinks something is wrong with her DH.

She has LONG cycles, every month she calls me and tells me she is 5 days late then 2 days later she gets AF. So I am assuming she has long cycles, since I get an update every month. Also they have not used BC, in over 3 years, just wing it and condoms.

Did I give her the wrong advice to wait it out?

Thoughts?

Oh and I know maybe I gave her that advice b/c I secretly do not want her to get BFP before me. B/t her and my sister TTCing, I am on pins and needles.

I just do not want something to be wrong with her.

8 months is fine, it's after 12 that you're advised to see dr
