Question

Vitamin A

Hello! I went to my GP the other day and told her I was ttc.. she said that I should avoid vitamin A. Does anyone know why? And can you get a multivitamin which doesn't include Vitamin A?

My doctor said the same - too high a dose can be detramental to the developing baby, especially during the first few weeks after conception. She said not to eat any liver (urgh anyway!) or use anything like cod liver oil. Most of the vitamin suppliments do contain it though, but not the specialist pre-conception / prenatal ones I think :-)

Too much vitamin A can harm a developing baby. If you take a prenatal vitamin it should have the correct amount of vitamin A in it.

AND, just to add...

Vitamin A is fat soluable... meaning it is STORED in the body rather than flushed from our system when we build excess like Vitamin C... so if you are TTC try to stay away from it as you may build an excess store that might harm the baby.

If you are considering TTC, you might start laying off that vitamin too and start taking a good prental so you can make sure your Vitamin A stores are where they should be.

Remember a healthy well balanced diet should be giving you the right amount of vitamins and is BETTER vitamins for your body anyway.
