Anticardiolipin test - or something like that?

Hi all,

Went to drs this morning and he is sending me for an anticardiolipin test (apologies if that is mis-spelt) and 21 day progesterone tests.

I have had the 21 day tests before but not this anti-whats-it-called one. Anyone know what its all about?

And I forgot to ask the dr, but as I just Mc'd is it 21 days from next AF or from MC bleed? What do you reckon??

Thanks!!

The anti-cardiolipin test will be in relation to your miscarriage, so sorry you had to go through that too. You need cardiolipin antibodies to help regulate blood clotting, sometimes your body can see these antibodies as something thats attacking you and will produce anti-cardiolipin ones to in turn attack it, very basic explination, so they will be testing to see if you have high anti-cardiolipin antibodies and whether it could have been the cause of your mc. Anti-cardiolipin antibodies could have produced tiny blood clots that prevented blood flow to the placenta, it may not be the case, but thats what hes looking for anyway. If it turns out this is the cause it very easily managed with medication like baby aspirin or heparin, all blood thinners. As for what to class the 21 days at, if you had a natural mc, I would say that the first day would be classed as af, if it wasnt then you would probably need to wait until you had a normal cycle and get the 21 day bloods done then. Good luck hun, let us know how you get on!

hey, day 21 is a bit misleading. Its for progesterone but has to be done 7 days after ovulation! So, thats on average day 21 but not if u dont ovulate on day 14! I am having mine done on day 29 next week as i have ovulated later after my chemical. Just get yourself some sticks and look for yr surge. I booked mine 8 days after that....figured i should ov near enough 24 hours later. So, yes you can go after the mc but you need to know you had yr lh surge! Even in cycles after yr mc it wont necessarily be day 21! Does that make sense? :-) 7 days after ov is the key not day 21! So misleading, my doc was pretty oblivious to this! X

Thanks Beachlover! You are such a fertility boffin!! So going on last mc's pattern, I should ov around cd24, so should go for tests around cd31? I am obsessed with peeing on things or dipping things in pee so I'm sure I'll spot ov when/if it happens! If I don't then FF will I'm sure!

yeah around day 31, I kept booking a test...then canceling and moving it on as ov got later and later....the surgery must think im a freak!!

As long as you ov, you can do it after a MC no problem...might speed up yr getting back to TTC (no excuse from OH then)

I have just given my GP a list of Level 1 blood tests that specialists do initially, and asked if he can do my a blood form for as many as a GPs surgery can do, still waiting to hear what they can and cant do but thought it would be worth getting them done now instead of waiting for consultant to request them....and use up my BUPA allowance!! THese are them, might be worth asking:

1. Full blood count, Liver function tests, Urea and Electrolytes

2. Thyroid function tests (including TSH and Free T4)

3. Autoimmune anti-bodies (must include anti-nuclear, anti-mitochondrial and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies

4. Anti cardiolipin antibodies (both IgG and IgM)

5. Thrombophilia screen (must include Lupus anticoagulant, factor V Leiden, Prothrombin gene mutation )

6. MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase)

7. Karyotype (for male and female)
