Hmm well they do things a bit differently here in Canada. Our GPs normally do all of our papsmears etc. unless there is something wrong, than we get referred elsewhere. I was only referred to an OB after I got pregnant! Just goes to show that things are done so much differently in different parts of the world

They are all doctors but a Gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the medical brand of Gynecology. "The branch of medicine dealing with health care for women, especially the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the female reproductive organs." An Obstetrician covers the surgical care for you during and after pregnancy.

A Family Practice Doctor or General Practitioner is your usual family doctor or doctor that takes a look at you for regular check ups etc. They may send you to a specialist for further analysis, that's where doctors such as gynecologists, obstetricians, dermatologists, and other specialists, come in.

Also, a midwife is more like an assistant for you during and post pregnancy. They are not qualified to preform medical treatment and procedures like your gynecologist or obstetrician. They specialize in prenatal, child birth, and postnatal care.
