I take a regular women's multivitamin, as well as 4mg of folic acid (doctor's orders) and 1000mg of calcium w/ 125mg of vitamin D daily. I think it's a good idea to eat well, sleep enough hours each night, drink a lot of water and generally try to keep up our health in order to conceive. I think a lot of women start taking prenatal vitamins before they're actually pregnant - I certainly don't think it'll hurt, and if it helps, all the better!

I don't think they make a lot of difference on their own but you're more likely to get pregnant if you're in good health and eating well, so if they help to improve that then they should improve your chances.

It's a good idea to take them from when ttc though because you're meant to take the folic acid from the start.

Ideally you should be taking a pre-natal vitamin 3-5 months before you fall preg, then a different one when you do get preg (going off whats available here in Oz)

The reason for taking them is mainly for the folic acid, but other goodies in it as well decrease the chance of abnormalities such as spinabifida.

But what the other girls said re health. To give yourself the best chance of conceiving and you baby a healthy start you should be at a healthy weight (not over or under weight) exercising lightly, eating well, drinking lots of water, staying away from things such as caffine, high fat and sugar intake and stop smoking, drinking and drugs if that applies to you.

The way I think of it is creating a healthy environment for the baby before it is born. Everyone gets their spare room turned into a pretty nursery, the bassinet, pram, clothes etc, but its most important to be healthy on the inside for the baby and continue to do all the right things while you're pregnant so the baby is on a very nutritional placenta etc.

Best of luck!

I take Blackmores Pregnancy and Breast Feeding Gold.
My doc told me it's good to get your body ready for pregnancy.

So I guess it can't hurt.

I take pre natal vitamins now and I am not yet pregnant (testing on Dec 26 unless AF shows up before then). In addition, I take a Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc supplement, and a B complex vitamin because I'm vegetarian. I've been taking these supplements for about one month now and I do feel somewhat better than I did before I started taking them. Also, I've lost a few pounds since taking them. Not sure if that's related or not, but that's what happened for me. It really shouldn't hurt as long as it's not interfereing with any medications you take. Also, if you are not anemic you should avoid any vitamin supplement that includes iron.

DO you know why your not supposed to take it? My prenatal vitamin has a low amount of iron in it and it was the one my doc suggested (materna). My doc is a bit of a quack though so I was just wondering if there is actually reason for it?

If your doctor recommended it to you take it. I just know that they always say not to take supplemental iron unless your anemic because I think it builds up in the body and can be toxic. But don't quote me on that...
