Are we too old to conceive

Hi. I am quite new to this site and hope you might be able to give me some hope and support.

For various complicated reasons, my partner and i havent tried to conceive until just recently, though I have been desperate to have a baby for about 3 years now. I am 37, nearly 38 and he is 47. I know that time isnt on our side and looking into this on the web, there is so many websites that say its difficult for women after 35 to conceive and for men over 40 as well. so much so, that i feel really down about our chances .... i just wondered if there were any success stories out there that might make me feel more hopeful that i might be able to conceive. I know it could take quite some time, but my partner doesnt really want to be becoming a father (again for him) at 50. We both have had some initial tests done and both came back fine, though i would say we have only been trying for 2 months, so i know its early days really.

any advice / help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying and I am almost 37. I have had several tests done, and they have told me there is no reason I cant get pregnant, so there is hope ! ! Maybe get some more tests done on you both first. My DH is only 33, but we got a S/A done just to be sure, and all is well.

Good luck hun

Hi and welcome,

Your not too old. There are loads of people the same age as you and older so try not to worry (I am 32).

You will probably find this thread helpful as it is for people in their 30s/40s.

Everyone is really nice on this site. This is the thread.

Ay up fizz - I'm in a similar boat to you... I'm 39 and TTC #1, though my partner is a lot younger so time is on his side.

I'm on my 7th cycle now and so far, no joy - but I am seeing my doctor and getting things checked out. A word of advice if you go to your GP, don't be entirely honest about how long you have been trying. Given that most doctors will tell you that you need to be trying for a year before they'll run tests - you need to add a bit of time on.

My theory is this; if you are 21 and trying to conceive, you can afford to give it a year to let mother nature take her course.....when you are in your late 30's, that year is one that you can't afford to waste.

So, I know it's a lie - but I don't feel bad about telling my GP that I've been TTC for 18 months rather than 6

Good for you Urchin! I am going to the doctor within the next couple of weeks and don't know how long I should say I have been trying. Bear in mind I am worried about low BBT temps and painful sex and think I will need some sort of intervention. Was thinking of saying Dec 08. Really it has been since March 2009.
