I personally will opt for a Hospital Birth, purely because I'm such a worrier and if I gave birth at home I'd be petrified of something going wrong. Also this will be my first, so it's not like I've done anything like this before! For my second (wow, thinking ahead now!) things might be different.

With my 1st I was 17, and had been in the stages of early labor for over a week and seemed to be "stuck" at 3.5cm so at 40 wks I was induced. After 7.5 hours and a 4th degree episieotomy my son was born 8lbs5oz with the aide of a vaccume.

With my 2nd I went into labor naturally at 37 weeks. I had him after 8 hours of labor, natural epidural free and my biggest accomplishment was I had no epiesietomy or tearing, and needed no stitches.

With my 3rd I had been on hospitilized bedrest for some time due to low amnio fluid. They induced me at 37 weeks but my daugther had stunted growth due to almost no amnio fluid and her lungs were immature. The NICU estimated her age based on her appearance and problems as a 34 weeker. She was 6lbs1oz. I had an epidural in place with this labor but no meds administered yet. They requested I had it in place because they were worried of the need of an emergency C-section due to distress, and my needing amnio infusions among other issues. She was born with no pain meds in 1 push. No tearing/cutting again.

My goal for my next birth is 2 things. 1. I do not want to be induced, out of my 3 babies only 1 has come on its own and I prefer the relaxed atmosphere of a natural birth and not being tied to the bed while hooked up to pitocin, and 2. I will not allow an epiesietomy, if need be I will tear but hopefully my path will follo w my last 2 births and I will require no stitches. Other then that I pray for a healthy baby who I can bring home with me and not have spend weeks in the NICU like my daughter. While she is healthy now, it was a bumpy road getting here.

I do like the idea of the midwife led units and home from home centres though - so you are in a more natural environment and not totally medicalised, but still within easy reach of the theatres/obstetricians/paediatricians and all the equipment and expertise should something not go to plan.
On the other hand I know plenty of women who have had sucessful home deliveries with no complications.
ill be going to hospital, id be too scared to do it at home. im a nurse, so probably just thinking too much of the negatives, but id definately feel safer in hospital. and id like pain relief, hope labours not like 3 days long
