Rh Negative Genetic?

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick question about Rh Negative Blood. My FH and I are currently TTC'ing #1 and have been now for 14 months, without any luck. I have had cycles where I have been 2-3 weeks late, but all hpt's negative.

I know that my mum had mentioned when I was younger that she had a problem when pregnant with me and my younger sister, as well as a miscarried fetus due to Rh Negative blood. My mum fell pregnant with me at 27 and my sister at 30, but had a miscarriage before me and between my sister and I, and as far as I know (from what she told me) it was all because of her Rh Negative blood. My questions are....

1. Could Rh Negative Blood be genetic and passed onto me?
2. Could this be one reason that my FH and I have not become pregnant for so long, or maybe had early miscarriages that we were not aware of?

Would really appreciate some advice!!

Thankyou So Much

Rh negitive is a blood type... so i guess its kinda gentic? do you know your blood type? You know how some people are say O blood type well there is O negitive which would be Rh negitive blood... thats what the negative stands for (correct me if im wrong ladies)
Ask your doctor what blood type you are

I am RH negative. I have 2 daughters...one is RH negative and one is RH positive. Blood type is genetic. 1 RH negative and 1 RH postive can have a postive or a negative child and two negatives will have a negative so it would depend on which parents RH you inherited. Being RH negative wont stop you from getting pregnant. An Rh-negative mother will develop antibodies against Rh-positive blood cells only if fetal blood crosses the placenta and enters her bloodstream. If the babies blood RH is positive your body sees it as something that shouldnt be there and tries to get rid of it. If you have any bleeding after becoming pregnant and the placenta has developed at that point then you need to have a rhogam injection. If you do not have any bleeding or spotting then you will have to have the injection at 28 weeks and after birth if your child happens to be RH positive. The injection of Rh immunoglobulin blocks the mother's immune system from seeing the fetal cells, if they do happen to get into her bloodstream, so she will not become sensitized and make antibodies.

As Parkep said, it's a blood type, i.e. A-, O-, etc. If both parents have (-) blood types you will too, otherwise it could go either way.

Being Rh(-) will not prevent you from conceiving.

The problem arises if the baby has a blood type that is Rh(+) and there is mixing of the yours and baby's blood. This generally only happens in instances of miscarriage, birth, or bleeding during pregnancy. Your body will start producing anti-bodies in response to the Rh which in turn attack baby's blood.

If you're not sure of your blood group, ask your doctor. If you're Rh- and think that you may have had a miscarriage in the past, they can give you an injection to prevent your body from producing the antibodies. All women who are Rh- with partners that are Rh+ are given the injections after birth (or after bleeding during pregnancy if present) to prevent any future problems.

Good luck hun.

It means that because you are RH positive your body already possesses the antigen and therefore no injections are required regardless of whether your baby is RH positive or negative.
