Valium and TCC

I have bipolar disorder. Its very mild. I was on antidepressants for a long time but i refuse to take them any more cos i dont want to be a zombie. I take about 2 5mg valium a day.
I know this will no dout make things harder, but i realy dont have too much of a choice right now.

can anyone share expreriances? etc

I just read that valium is not good while ttc, it can be harmful to the baby so I suggest talking to your doc about it. Don't know if you have already?

Hi Jahira,

I feel your pain....I have recurrent depression and have been on Prozac for years. I also have chronic heartburn and a disorder called Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. I was able to take Ativan and Nexium to keep it under control before TTC. I had a very very early miscarriage on February 24, found out I was pg on Feb 14, so I've been off all meds since then. I have to admit, it's been tough. I have been scouring the internet for natural methods of relaxation and homeopathic treatments.

For your situation, I think that you should not be taking valium while TTC. It has a very long half-life, meaning it takes a long time, days or weeks to be eliminated from the body. It is also very addictive, not to say that you are at all, but that is a potential that is best to stay away from while TTC. From benzo.org.uk:
Diazepam [Valium] is one of the most slowly eliminated benzodiazepines. It has a half-life of up to 200 hours, which means that the blood level for each dose falls by only one half in about 8.3 days.

But, there are many other medications, if you have to take them, with a shorter half-life like Xanax, which is 12 hours as opposed to 8 days with valium! And I am no doctor, you would absolutely have to talk to him/her, but it seems that would be a safer alternative, but personally I would abstain in the 2ww.

I'm sorry this is so long, I hope this helps, and good luck to you...do all you can to relax naturally since that is the ultimate goal!

Thanks guys. I havnt acutaly told my doc that hubby and i are trying for a baby. I just said i wanted to get on a little meds as poss and still live a normal life.
I know it sounds odd that i havnt spoken to the GP about it, but its kinda a long story i dont know if you want to hear it. I cant switch GPs as i live in a town with only the one practice.
Im planning on getting preggers and just saying, im preggers! Im keeping it! Now what?

I think you should discuss it with your GP. They may have some better suggestions as to what meds are safer during ttc and pregnancy. I would not take the valium unless on the doctors advice. He might be able to refer you for a specialist opinion? You can't be the only person with bipolar disorder to want to conceive.

Its just that my doctor hates, and i mean hates with a passion my partner. If i were to tell her we were trying for a baby id get more of a lecture then i can handle. She'd give me douts i dont need and just in general make me feel like im doing the wrong thing.

Ill try put it realy realy simple

My partner used to be an alcoholic, and smokes dope etc etc. He's epileptic and she thinks he self inflicts seizures. Hes 39 and im 25.

She wants me to leave him. I cant talk to her.

Oh geez hon, that's a horrible situation, and I am talking 100% about your doctor's shitty judgmental attitude. Self-inflicting a seizure...

I know you said you can't get another doctor but this is ridiculous. Unless he is beating the crap out of you on a daily basis or something like that she has no business suggesting that you leave him. I would drive 500 miles to see another doc if that were the case. Do everything you can to see someone else. Your doctor's attitude is hindering your ability to seek proper medical care. Please hon, I'm begging you, don't put up with it!
