| Folic Acid / Pregnacare Hi there, i hope this question hasn't been asked too many times before (it probably has, but i couldn't see anything when i searched!)...I was just wondering if anyone is taking 'Pregnacare' in place of normal folic acid tablets?
I switched to pregnacare yesterday, as it was on a special offer (3 months supply for the price of one month!). I took it around 7.30pm with my meal (jacket potato and cheese!) and went out to work. At 10.30 i started getting belly ache, crampy like indigestion, then at 11.30 the pain got very bad and at midnight i had to dash to the loo, and i had diarrhoea on and off for the next three and a half hours and bad stomach pains!
I didn't eat or drink anything else unusual yesterday so i am assuming it *must* be the pregnacare...has anyone else experienced any side effects like this?
I am wondering if maybe a jacket potato wasn't really enough of a meal to take it with as the box does say to take 'on a full stomach' Hmmm...
Any ideas gratefully received! Thanks. | | | | Status: Offline

| hiya, I take pregnacare with no real problems.
Although if i don't take it on a full stomach it does give me heartburn/indegestion.
I would have thought the potato was enough but maybe not (not much help am i )
If i were you then i think i would try it again today to check if it is that causing the problem perhaps with a larger meal. It would be a shame to waste them now you have so many.
Good luck x | | | | Status: Online

| Hiya,
Its probably the iron in the pregnacare which didn't agree with you, it is really hard on the tummy as is high dose Vit C. Have another go when you have a full stomach and see how you get on for a couple of days. The main thing is to get your folic acid in, the other vits are just a bonus. If they still dont agree with you then you may as well go back to the folic acid tablet, no point in making yourself feel ill and add that to the list of pressure when TTC
Good Luck!! xoxo | | | | Status: Offline

| Hello
I've just switched to Pregnacare from plain old Tesco's folic acid tablets, and so far haven't had any problems. I take mine after my main meal in the evening. Maybe you're right and the jacket potato wasn't quite enough. Or maybe your stomach's a bit more delicate than most. Or maybe it was just something else - a little bug or something. If I were you (and I'm not a doctor!!), I'd agree with Lalita and try again, maybe with something a bit more substantial, and see if you get the same effect. If it keeps happening, then switch back.
On an aside, I've got my dh on Wellman tablets - he moans about the size of them and claims he can taste them after they've gone down (he likes to make a fuss!), but he has the weakest stomach on the planet, and so far he hasn't complained about any dodgy side-effects (thank god or we'd never hear the end of it!!) But everyone's different, so I guess you'll just have to experiment a bit!
Good luck xx | | | | Status: Offline

| Thankyou for all your replies.
My stomach is sadly a little more sensitive than most...but i have good news, as for the past 2 evenings i have stuffed my face prior to taking my pregnacare and been fine!
Just kidding...but i have eaten decent size meals and then taken the tablets with a glass of fresh orange and been absolutely fine...so fingers crossed it looks like they won't be going to waste after all | | | | Status: Offline

| i started taking pregnacare plus about a week before i found out i was actually pregnant, i'd started feeling sick that whole week and everyone at work knew i was TTC
i started taking them on the doc's advice, but on friday i just didn't fancy anything to eat and knew that if i still took the tablets that i'd be sick
Saturday morning was the first morning that i didn't feel sick or was actually sick, so i went out and bought just plain folic acid
Sunday i wasn't sick, today i've not been sick, but yesterday i was - but i was very tired when i woke up and was up early to go to work
so if you start to feel sick while on them then i'd suggest swapping to plain ol' folic acid and the omega 3 bit stinks if you accidentally smell them! | | | | Status: Offline
