Pizza in Lunchboxes?

We have a healthy eating policy at DD1's school so are only allowed to put healthy stuff into Lunchboxes.

Would you say Pizza is acceptable, it is all homemade even the dough and only has tomato puree and cheese as the topping?

It will only be once every 1-2 weeks so not very often. I always try to keep it healthy but am not sure where Pizza is classed in it all.

If it wouldn't be acceptable and classed as unhealthy why would this be? Just curious really as I obviously know what goes into it and the cheese amount would be basically the same as a cheese sandwhich.

Thanks in advance

i think it would be best to ask the school if it would be acceptable. I can see both sides, as to why it would be classed as healthy & also why it wouldn't.

Sorry i'm not much help but i think asking the school would be the best option x

I would say it would be fine. If not, I'd be interested to know how it compares to a tuna sandwich laden with mayonnaise, or as you say a cheese sandwhich on white bread!

Yes i think its fine and even better for being homemade, i think its something different and makes a change from sandwhiches..........children have pizza slices in their lunch box at my daghters school, not all children like sandwhiches so have lots of other different things instead x

oh and healthier than a choclate spread sandwhich!

To do it more healthily, I do my kids pizza on a wholemeal pitta bread- slice the pitta bread in half, passata on the bottom then choppied onions peppers and mushrooms, light babybel sprinkled on the top!! Ive never done it for packed lunch but sure it will manage just fine, and I don't view that as being unhealthy personally.

Normal pizza is quite fatty- you usually put a full sugar and fat sauce on to it, full fat cheese, and the dough is considered as being quite fatty.

I'd say that's a fantastic healthy lunch, once in a while like you say. I'm a teacher and although we're not strict about what is in lunchboxes, we do promote healthy values.

This is actually one of the things about my job that winds me up like crazy... rant coming up! It is SO SO important that schools support a 'healthy and balanced' diet, rather than sending out a message that everything is unhealthy unless you live on vegetables. Children need to know that it's fine to have the occasional chocolate biscuit or packet of crisps, so long as it is balanced with plenty of nutritious things too. It's sad when we see children eating a lunchbox that consists of nothing but pre-packed and processed food (pepperami sticks, cheese strings, sausage rolls, chocolate bars etc) but none of those things are 'bad' as such, in moderation. Convenience and cost has to play a part in lunchboxes too... I am very against the 'lunchbox police' style of dinner lady. I've heard of children at other schools being actually told off and prevented from eating things in their lunch box because they are 'unhealthy'. I won't even get started on how ridiculously wrong that is... certainly not the child's fault and also not the schools place to dictate what they eat!!!

Sorry to rant like that... I hope your DD enjoys her pizza :-)

Welllll according to the US congress pizza is a vegetable.

Oh wait. They are just stupid.
Homemade pizza sounds great. But a standard order out pizza I wouldn't think would be considered healthy

Thanks for the replies. She took it today and nothing was said so I'm assuming it was fine. I think i'll just stick to it every 1-2 weeks as it then just gives her something that bit different. She took it with a yogurt, fruit and rice cake so I know the rest was fine.

Absolutely - in what way is it actually different to a cheese and tomato sandwich, which would be fine? I make homemade pizza loads and to my mind, nothing unhealthy whatsoever goes into it. I wouldn't let a school tell me otherwise either!

I find that healthy homemade versions of the classic 'unhealthy' foods like burgers, pizza and sausage rolls always go down a treat!
