A question of words

Hey ladies,

Quick question, probably (almost certainly) a stupid one about talking. E is now almost 17months old and her vocab is coming along nicely. She can say about 20 recognisable words now.

For example if I hold up some shoes she will say shoes or if I show her an apple she will say apple. However if I show her a picture of either of those 2 things in a book and ask her what they are she will say "a book" it's like she has no idea of how to relate those two things (object and picture) together. In all honesty she is quite correct when I point to a book and ask what it is and she replys a book.

How can I get her to relate the word for the physical object to the picture she sees in a book or am I just wasting my time?

First of all: what a smart cookie!

This might be a dumb question, but have you tried lining up the picture in the book with the "real-life" object right next to it? Maybe seeing the different representations of the same word would help?

Sorry if you've already tried this, and that I'm no use!

How about circling the picture with your finger whilst saying what it is?

I have tried this, she'll name the item in my hands then when I point to the picture she'll say it's a book.

Bless her, technically she is right - it is a book!! I think this is very common. She associates the word "shoes" with her own shoes, possibly not with anyone else's shoes/shoes she doesn't often see. I have a friend whose little one learnt the word "dog" but would only ever use it for their dog. When they saw a dog out on the street she would never call it a dog. Whereas my boy has learnt that cats say "Miaow" and whenever he sees ANY four legged creature (cat, dog, rabbit etc) he will shout "Miaow" as loudly as he can as he thinks that all animals are cats!! I think both are pretty normal but as someone else said, if you make it explicite by saying the word as you point at it (and maybe do the same when you see shoes in shops etc) then I'm sure she will pick it up very quickly xxx

That's just a developmental stage really. You could try to do something about it, but she'll just start doing it in her own time.
