potty training

Hi..

First child and confussed about potty training. How do you go about it? Jacobs 2 in 3 weeks.. so we started intoducing him to a potty about 3 months back. He didn't want to know! any way we've just come back from our holidays and whilst there i decided to leave his nappy off as much as poss. BIG IMPROVEMENT... jacob started telling us when he wanted to wee so we started rushing him to the bathroom. But then he'd say NO and just won't wee on the toilet! but he did do a poo once! anyway now we're back home i try to leave his nappy off int he evenings after his bath but he's just not interested at all in the potty still. He knows when he's weeing and tells us but just wont do it in his potty. He'll wee down his legs and then get upset! I just don't know how i go about it... when do i start leaving his nappy of during the day? will he just wet himself? do i need to tell his nursery (he goes 2 days a week) do i try sitting him on the toilet before or after meal times, before bedtime, after bathtime???? confussed.

desperate mother!

Your best bet might be speaking to the nursery and see how they go about it, then you'll get loads of support and you are both doing it the same way

Personally i would leave him for a few weeks then try again
Take him when you go to the toilet so he knows that even mummy has wee's
Take him to pick out his own "big boy" pants

You'll have loads of accidents at first but this is normal and all of a sudden it will just click with him.

If he doesn't like it or gets upset put nappies back on him then try again a week or so later

Before the age of 2 they don't really get it TBH

Good luck xx

Before the age of 2 they can't control their bladder, he will know the feeling (kind of) but he won't understand when he's going to go.

I would leave his nappy on for a bit, he doesn't sound ready.

Leave the potty out so he can still see it though. In a couple of weeks start by sitting him on the potty when he gets up in the morning, after meal times and before bed.

If he doesn't do anything or won't go on thats fine, praise him for trying!!! This is really important.

I think this is the first step, but only when he is ready. If it is forced he will push it away even more.

Good luck xx

Thanks for your replies. I think i'll speak to his nursery when i pick him up. I think it might be best to leave him a few more weeks. I'm sure in nursery he see's the other children going the loo. he's been moved up a class recently, he's now mixing with children who do use the toilet.
