Hannah loves her blocks, trains and cars! Thinking of getting her a dump truck for outside once the weather improves

Let's be honest, if anyone has a problem, it's usually dads over boys playing with 'girls' toys. I think it's some outdated homophobic thing or something.

I'm sure I've read somewhere about a study saying that when they grow up, boys were more likely to set off the gaydar if they had been refused 'girls' toys rather than just letting them play with what they wanted. So actually anyone who it did bother was doing totally the wrong thing!

I'd like to think that most people are happy to let their children play with toys that stimulate them rather than worrying about it being for girls or boys. My nephews love playing with their pushchairs, baby dolls (although one gets carried by her hair?? ), hoovers and irons.

When Darwin starts to show a preference, I'll absolutely buy him toys that are generally aimed at girls, if that's what he wants. He's got loads of stuffed animals, and he has one doll - a little Ty doll that was in with a bunch of Beanie Babies I gave him when he was born (they used to be my collection, now they're his drool mops!) We call her Penny, and he loves her to death. He plays with her yarn hair, tries to pull off her shoes, carries her around... if he wants 'action figures' or a Cabbage Patch doll or a Barbie when he's older I wouldn't hesitate - I had Tonka trucks when I was a little girl and played dress-up with ladies and men's clothes, I really don't think it's much of a big deal

I'll definately be getting Amelia "boys" toys.

When I was little my favourite toy was a tonka dumper truck with a winch on it. I loved that truck!

Not only will I offer Simon both, but I refuse to call them boys' or girls' toys!
I want toys that encourage building and creativity and exploring shapes (like blocks, lego, toy trains, etc), and I want toys that encourage nurturing and empathy (like dolls and teddies and all their gear). Both are very valuable things for my son to learn and both are really really fun depending on what mood you're in!
I say take the gender labels right off - they're outdated and not very helpful!
And that's my rant for the day!

Whatever kind of toy Aiden wants, he can have. If he wanted a doll, I'd get him one. Currently he's into destruction, so blocks are more up his alley, but I think once Mady has dolls, he'll want one, too. I don't see any sort of problem with it.

The only problem I think I'll have is my OH's dad. He freaked out when Aiden had his nails painted (a friend of mine did it because she was painting hers and Aiden wanted his done). I'm a bit concerned that he would freak out if Aiden wanted any "girl" toys. Oh well.

Yep!

We've got a few friends with sons and when they come over to ours the first thing they want to play with is Ophelia's pram or doll or something else pink just because they don't have it at home. I thinks its a bit mad to not let a child have certain toys because they're too boyish/girly xx

yes, definitely. though I have to say I wouldn't buy most girls stuff for a girl if I had one, why does everything have to be pink with princess written on? there's no choice!!
