General Anaesthetic :(

Seth has got conjunctivitis again for the 6th time since he was born. He has blocked tear duct in his right eye & has had it since he was born. It has never improved. His left one was also blocked but healed itself.

We're going to the Drs tonight and I think they're going to refer us to a specialist to get it sorted. procedure is under general anaesthtic. Im so scred for him I could cry.

I know he needs to have it done I just don't know if I can bare it!! I know the operation is nothing compared to what a lot of children on here have been through, and its not the procedure Im scared of, just the anaesthetic.

Can anyone give me their experiences please? e.g. how long the hospital stay is, how they administer it, what to expect when he falls asleep, what to expect when he wakes up, recovery time, side effects??

Sorry for being a total drama queen just I had a bad experience when I was younger and thats why Im nervous. I don't know if I can watch him fall asleep like that

Thanks in advance x

My son had a GA last year and i agree its quite scary as for what happens, this is what happened with us !!

We (all 3 of us) went into a room anastetics room i believe, and the put the mask over his face, we concentrated on being silly so he was distracted and within less than a minute he fell asaleep but they warned me he may twick a bit (like the startle reflex) which was fine.

we then lay him on the bed and left with a nurse

We decided to go and buy a drink and bring it back - we waited for 20 mins back in teh room and we heard a baby crying !!

I listerened and said thats not bean is it?? an hubby said no

It turned iut it was as 30 seconds later the nurse came thru and showed us to kieran, when he cam come round he was very combattive and not really like himself !!

Asking for mummy when i was clearly there but i just jumped on the bed and held him tight and he calmed down very very quicky !

I stayed on teh bed and was wheeled back to the childrens ward and but the time we got back he was wanting to watch TV lol

Whilst it was a bit scary the hospital were great and if we had to do it again !

I knwo its scary but if you can maybe concentrate on the good - ie afterwards ??

all the best xx

My LO has had 10 GA's. (8 of which were for brain surgery and before she was 8 weeks old.)

Firstly, he will be nil by mouth for at least eight hours before he's put to sleep. This is usually the hardest bit.

When the fall to sleep its horrible - they normally put them under using gas. You'll probably be holding him - and the gas will give you a horrible headache - and you'll cry because it is HORRIBLE to see them go under. They'll take him from you then, and you'll leave. When he comes back he will have a cannula in one of his veins incase of complications. He'll probably be groggy, maybe nasty. Tegan SCREAMS her head off every time she has a GA. Last time, we heard a baby crying too, I said to OH, "That's Tegan.." And sure enough it was. It was the loudest, most horrible cry I have ever heard.

He will more than likely be just fine hun. Children are strong, they can go through a hell of a lot and come up fighting Try not to worry.

thanks for being so honest hun, I really appreciate it, hence why I asked on here rather than the Dr because I know she'll lie to me because he needs it done and I think that she think if she tells me the truth Ill not put him through it (which I will just want to prepare myself really). She knows Im an overprotective mother

You're so brave for having to go through that so often hun, I dont think I could do it, you're an inspiration

Its not nice, they never get used to it no matter how many they have but you just have to remember it doesn't last long and they'll soon be back to themselves There's no point in me fibbing to you hun its not something any parent enjoys but it's only done when its absolutely necessary. Tegan's first one was when she was a day old and she was under for 9.5 hours. The first one is the hardest, it gets a BIT easier (fingers crossed Seth will never need another).

Im fortunate that he's pretty healthy on the whole, half his problems are caused by eye infections and half are lactose so as long as he has this and keep him off diary he should be fine lol

I say I get tired of him being poorly all the time, but I've been very lucky with him really, and he'll hopefully never have to go through this again.

Thanks again love x

Hiya

My son had a GA at 15 months old as he had to get his belly button sorted what had happened was my midwife ripped his cord off at 3 days old. It hadnt died properly if that makes sense and bled for MONTHS and it was just like a wee clot on top of his belly button that had to be removed.
When we went we were told to pick a parent to go into the room with him while he had the gas mask thing.
His daddy went (im too emotional would of upset Zak even more)
Nicholas (his daddy) was in and out the room with in 2 mins. Zak's op was meant to take 20 mins and took an hour for him to come round BUT thats due to my family history we all are really crap at coming round lol!
But he wasnt him self when he came round he was STARVING as he werent alowed to eat before op.
But its nothing to be scared of your baby will be brave and say whats the deal mum

xxxx

Us parents worry way to much lol xxxx
