Advice on baby pen or safety gate setup for lounge

Hi there

Probably a hard one to answer without seeing my lounge... but am trying to find out what people do to keep babys safe in lounge when they start to crawl and walk. Primarily keeping them away from things. This is if you leave the room to do housework or answer door. We dont need him cooped up if we are in the lounge, but you cant always be. He's 7 months and almost crawling.

There is no room for a play pen, unless we get rid of our dining table and chairs. So we initially thought of securing off part of the lounge where he currently plays which is in front of sofas (using a safety gate to divide the lounge and dining area), but the larege flat screen Tv is here and other devices like sky box and that (will be securing the tv to the wall with a strap) and we have a few small side tables with things on and under them (in boxes). We think its probably not the bext place, he could start to climb up on the sofas or tables or damage the tv etc. But then we dont have room to secure another part of the lounge, unless get rid of the dining table. We dont want a tiny pen.

Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions, what do you do?

Thanks a lot

Hi

We have baby gates on the stairs, kitchen door and patio door. We also keep the halll door shut so my little boy mainly plays in the lounge/dining area. My friend has a really cool barrier for her TV - it's a playpen which she has opened out and fixed to the wall each side (like two baby gates joined together). In our house we just use either sofa cushions or toy boxes to block the TV and games consoles - seems to work for us! I don't really leave Thomas in the room on his own for more than a few seconds though - to go to the loo or answer the door. I did try using our travel cot as a play pen when he was younger but he screamed the place down. I also cheat sometimes and when I really need him to be safe (like if I'm cooking and he's playing up) I stick him is his high chair and give him a biscuit

Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot, it does help to get some ideas... We wont leave him on his own for long of course, but as you say there are times you need to quickly pop out of the room, toilet, door, etc. So its at these times we want to be sure he is still safe.

We will probably get one of those gates that are flexible and can turn into a pen, to section off half the lounge, then as you say may put some barriers and things up in front of tv or something. But once he can climb on sofas he could climb onto cabinet where Tv is. I am just trying to think of all possibilities and make sure he cant do it. Maybe we shouldnt leave him in that part of the lounge where the sofas, tv's and small tables are at all, and I have to try to find a space in the other half of lounge, maybe get rid of dining table and chairs.

Thanks
