Wetting the bed

My son is 4 and a half.. I finally managed to get him out of nappies at night time 4months before his 4th bday- the health visitor told me not to worry about it until he had dry nights.. He stayed at my mums and I forgot to put a nappy in, she woke him for a wee at 11 and he stayed dry, so I thought, thats it.

He was great, I got him to go for a wee just before bed and woke him up at 11 and after a month or so I was leaving him later and later then I stopped waking him and he was fine
We still had a bit of a problem getting him to go in the day before he reeeaaly needed to which I had to stop him going off to play in his room and tell him to go as soon as I noticed him fidgeting.

He is now going thru that phase again, he will wait and wait until he is bursting and a few times has not got there in time.
He is also needing to wee at about 5am but instead of getting up and going (I've left night light in his room and a brighter one in the hall) he cries and wakes me up which makes me realy tired when its time to get up.

So I have been waking him at about 11 again is this the right thing to do?
He has a waterproof sheet on his bed and I also put a mattress protector under his duvet (it's a fitted one so I hook it over the mattress at the bottom, and over the duvet at the top.)

What do you all do? Someone suggested he was drinking too much in the evening, someone told me it makes no difference?

Help?

I really wouldn't wake him, just so that he learns his body's cues to wake himself up at night. Have you tried limiting drinks before bedtime so maybe he won't have to get up and go? Or even possibly putting a small potty in his room next to the nightlight so he doesn't have to go far?

I never woke Carly . although everyone told me to i just didnt see the good in it as it would usually wake her up fully and couldnt really get her back down , plus id need her to relise what a full bladder was like and when you got to go on your own rather then mummy will wake me.

I just made sure she went to the toilet right before bed i didnt let her drink as much though , sometimes she would wet the bed and when she did id say 'oh dear you must wake up when you need a wee and run to the toilet' she would hate the feeling of it all, and i would say help mummy take your bedding off ( she hated doing that) AFter a few accidents it kicked in she needed to go to the toilet . She was potty trained aout 2 and a half but night time trained at 3 since then no accidents!

I tried the potty thing but he just absolutely refuses to use one!
It's not when he's asleep it happens, a few times he's been crying and I've went down, he was crying because he needed to go, so I told him if he needed to go he must get out of bed and go, and told him that making mummy very tired when its time to get up is not good.
But the next time he just did it in his bed and didn't tell me until I asked where his jammies were an he told me they were wet- so then i exolained that he has to tell me so we can wash the bed.
he also has no pillow until I get to the shop tomorrow as it was soaked and he hates not having a pillow.
I have put a night light in the hall.. I would usually leave the light on but my bedroom is in the attic and has no door so the light stops me sleeping. I can't win! Lol

Will try not waking him befire I go to bed, hopefully it will be sorted before the LO is born I;d rather not have two to get up to in the night! Lol

i never ever worried about nightime dryness, my HV said it is not the same as teaching it by day and each child does it when ready so not worth all the worry

mine just wore pull ups to bed from about aged 4 as they were only peeing once a night anyway, when i had a week of dry pull ups in the moring i just stopped using them -

Ooh I got a little bit mad this morning
I went to bed at 11 as I was shattered then OH woke me up at 2 coming to bed, I could not get back to sleep and every time I was almost asleep either OH or the dog woke me up!

Soo.. when my son started crying at 5am I went down, switched his light on and told him to stop being lazy, get out of bed and get in the bathroom. On his way back to bed I told him it was really naughty waking mummy up when I am very tired and if he needs to wee then stop crying and go!

Feel bad for having a go at him but I am just so shattered I don't rememer being this tired when I was pregnant with him!
