We don't yell, but we say NO in a very stern voice.

I hate quoting things from Supernanny, but the one episode she spent time with the mom teaching her how to vary her voice. So when praising she had the happy excited voice and when disiplining, she had to say NO in a stern voice. She found it really hard to do but once she got it right you could really see the difference in the kids.

My son has learnt now that no means no. He will still try his luck and got back to things he know is wrong. He is not allowed on the coffee table for example, but every now and again he will try. As he is about to climb up, he looks at me. If I don't quickly give him the upset face and say no, he will climb up.

We have tried to be consistent so we make sure both me, my hubby and the nanny say no for the same things. I find that really helps as he knows the boundaries.

I think most of us have snapped at one point or another don't feel bad.

With Hannah we have actually found that removing her from the situation and having her sit off by herself for a minute, she understands "sit down" (we don't leave her long at all) works remarkably well. She does understand no, be careful etc. sometimes she just chooses to ignore us!
