cough remedies/medicines anyone?

Right i've had a chest infection & as usual josh has now gotten a cough & a bit of a snotty nose, We both seem to be very susceptible to chest infections so whilst he's just got a cough does anyone recommend anything?

Only thing i've got in is benylin night cough syrup but i don't think it works, He is coughing that much its making him wretch & we're both losing sleep of a night because he is constantly coughing,His throat is sore because of it now.
In himself though he is fine & happy & isn't ill so i don't really want to go the docs if i can help him myself.

What do you all use for bad coughs on your children ?
Do any of you swear by anything or have any diff remedies?

Thanks ladies x

Might be worth a trip to docs they could give him some salbutamol syrup ( like for asthma) that would help him stop coughing at night so he can get some rest. I always get chest infections too - its really rubbish but the only thing I've found that really help are my inhalers. Maybe pharmacist could recommend an alternative to benylin?

He's over 1 right? We use honey for coughs. We try to avoid meds if possible so we don't have any cough medicines...well and they don't sell them for 2 and under here anymore anyways but even for my older ones. Also letting them sleep with an extra pillow, humidifer going as well

You could try some hot water with lemon and honey in - makes the tickly throat/cough better.

Yep i've phoned today & i can't get in quick enough how stupids that!
She said is it an emergency ? So i explained & she said " oh so he's just got a cough " I had to fully go into detail about how we both get chest infections ALOT & how he was being sick with wretching. The only doctor available was one who nobody will see as he either sends you away with nothing then you always end up back being asked " why didn't you come sooner " or he just miss diagnoses so you end up back anyway
He really needs sacking, so i've to ring back in the morning to see if there is an appointment tomorrow

I've tried honey & lemon but he wont touch it

Have you tried just a spoonful of honey? That's what we do, it coats their throat and they are good for like 6-8hrs, we usually do it right before bed so they can get some sleep
