Baby gate for bottom of stairs - advice please

we've tried two so far. they sit on the bottom step, i've nearly broken my leg twice trying to negotiate the bottom step that has the 'leg' of the stairgate on it. these stair gates aren;t cheap! can anyone recommend one that maybe doesn;t sit on the actual step? also, how do they fasten to the wall when it's on the bottom step? (we don;t have wall to fasten it to, if it's bottom bit wasn't to sit on the bottom step.)

i know this doesn;t make sense sorry! any advice of some i could look at?

We have the lindham ones - http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...>BABY+GATE.htm - the bits on the left of the picture are screwed onto the bannister pole and the bits the gate clicks into are screwed onto the wall. There is no bottom leg for tripping over (we had one like that before and it was a nightmare!)

we bought an extra bit of wood and fitted it to the stairs so the gate would fit.

We have this at the top of our stairs:

And our main part of livingroom to hallway & dining area of our livingroom to kitchen with these on so she can't even get to the stairs!

thanks for all of your suggestions... i suppose that if you are not going to have that bottome bar (to trip over!) then you HAVE to fix it to the wall??? other wise it would fall over wouldn;t it? (OH did't want to fix it to the wall)

I have this one http://www.cymaxbaby.com/Common/Prod...&SrcID=2602411
i dont know if its suitable for you, i used it as a gate for my kitchen, it extends, it made of metal and is not one of those stupid ones you have to step over and break your neck.
