Constipation in a 4yr old?

My little man Casen has been having pooping problems the past couple days I've noticed he goes in there alot more often than usual like 5-6 times a day and he's been saying his tummy hurts a little on and off but I thought he actually may have had a bit of diarrhea. I don't have to wipe him or anything so I don't go in there unless there is a problem. Well today he came running in there as I was getting out of the shower to jump on the toilet...this makes number 4 today...and he was pushing so hard his entire body, seriously head to toe was just trembling. And he just burst into tears screaming it hurt I felt soooo bad for him. He said his tummy and butt both hurt. I asked him if any of the other times he had been in there today had he been able to go and he said no and I asked about yesterday and he said no. So now I feel bad for not knowing before it was this bad But he struggled atleast a good 20min and finally went just a tiny piece (TMI sorry). But I don't get it, the past couple weeks they have been eating fruit like it's going out of style, tons of apples (atleast one a day), strawberries like crazy, plums, peaches, nectarines, kiwis, apricots, oranges (usually oranges alone would fix this problem) He has had juice the past couple days just not today...lots of water. He eats whole wheat bread that's high in fiber...I don't get it??? Why would he be constipated?? And what else can I do...since he's having all this fruit that's what I would normall do to fix something like this? I'm not big on medicines so if anyone else knows any tricks I can try please let me know or I might have to head to the store when my DH gets home

Too much fruit can sometimes not be good... I think all you can do is give him lots of water and maybe some prune juice.

If it is too bad then take him to ER and get a suppository.

You may or may not be able to buy them at a pharmacy too... I know you can get mineral oil in the pharmacy's.

Yeah they have over the counter ones you can buy. BUT after posting this and a few more trips to the bathroom he finally went...He must have been stopped up really bad though i can't believe that much was in him. Poor thing, but he feels better now, he said his tummy is sore but not hurting like it was so that's good.
