Is a spinal block same as a spinal tap like I had during my c-section? That just makes you completely numb from the chest down?

Why on earth(besides the complete pain relief) would you want to be completely numb from the chest down during a vaginal birth? I mean the pain relief would be amazing but you're numb!! (if it is indeed the same thing)

I'm aiming for a natural birth for my kids. (Family history of HORRIBLE side effects from anesthesia--mom gets seriously f*cked up from spinals AND I nearly died when I went under the knife at 16!--general anesthesia) I really wish that gas and air was given out here. I'm NOT willing to get numbed out or knocked out. I might not ever come out of it. Literally. I'm terrified of ever doing anything like that again.

So for me it's nothing or well....that's it. Good thing I want a natural birth anyway, right? o_O

I'd love to have a natural birth if I can handle it. I'm pretty good with pain - never scream when I get hurt or anything, just cuss under my breath a lot lol - but I know that I will demand pain relief if I truly need it. I'll never know unless I try though, right? I think the mothers out there who have gone without a single thing and endured EVERY bit of pain that comes with childbirth deserve gold medals. Kudos to you ladies!

When I was younger I didn't understand why they couldn't just knock me out with a baseball bat

I'm understand now though, how being unconscious could make a vaginal birth difficult!
